What it is

What is ISO 20252?

ISO 20252, Market, opinion and social research, including insights and data analytics — Vocabulary and service requirements, is maintained by ISO/TC 225. It establishes terms, definitions and service requirements for organisations that conduct research, and it states that non-research activities such as direct marketing fall outside it.

ISO describes the standard as covering every stage of a study, from the first contact between client and research provider to the presentation of results. The 2019 edition brought in the access panel content of ISO 26362 and the digital analytics content of ISO 19731, so a single standard now spans surveys, panels and analytics work.

Current edition. ISO 20252:2026, the fourth edition, was published on 1 September 2026 and supersedes ISO 20252:2019. Earlier editions appeared in 2006, 2012 and 2019. Agencies certified to the 2019 edition should confirm the move to the new edition with their certification body.

Who it is for

Who asks for ISO 20252 and why?

ISO names a wide set of organisations that rely on the standard, and research buyers increasingly expect proof of a controlled process:

  • Corporate insight buyers. Brand, product and customer-experience teams want confidence that sampling, fieldwork and analysis follow a defined, checked method.
  • Government and public research. Ministries and agencies commissioning opinion and social research may ask for the standard in tenders.
  • Panel and fieldwork providers. Subcontractors supplying respondents or interviews are asked to show the same discipline as the agency that hired them.
  • Analytics and insight firms. Businesses offering data analytics as research find the standard now speaks to their work directly.

Consistency, transparency and confidence in results are what the certificate stands for; the system is what delivers them.

Requirements

What are the main ISO 20252 requirements?

The clause titles of the 2026 edition were not verified for this page, so the list follows the scope ISO publishes for ISO 20252; your system is checked against the 2026 edition itself during the programme.

  • Vocabulary: shared terms and definitions for research, insights and data analytics
  • The research project: service requirements for each stage, from first client contact to the presentation of results
  • Access panels: management of research panels, part of the standard since the 2019 edition
  • Data analytics: digital and data analytics services carried out as research
  • Boundaries: non-research activities such as direct marketing stay outside the system

What does useful ISO 20252 evidence look like?

Signed-off proposals and questionnaires, sampling and fieldwork records, interviewer and panel checks, data-processing verification, reports traced back to the data, and client feedback with corrective actions. Effivity holds them against each project, so the certification auditor can follow any study from brief to debrief.

ISO 20252 implementation

Effivity · ISO and GRC software, included in every engagement

How Effivity helps you fulfil, automate and simplify the requirements of ISO 20252.

Every Sterling ISO 20252 engagement includes Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Your consultant configures the workspace within the agreed scope, so documents, risks, audits, nonconformities, complaints, supplier evaluations, training records and management review live in one place, the system runs in daily work and the certification auditor reviews a live system rather than a binder. Sterling consulting clients get their Effivity subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

Effivity: Context of the Organisation dashboard with issues, interested parties and scope
Effivity · Context of the Organisation dashboard
Context

Context, scope and interested parties

The scope statement, the internal and external issues and the interested parties are kept in one register and reviewed on a schedule, so the context stays current as the business changes instead of being rewritten before each audit.

Leadership

Policy, roles and objectives

The policy, the responsibilities and the objectives with their measures, owners and dates live where the people who own them work; progress is reported from the system, not from a separate spreadsheet.

Planning

Risks and opportunities

A risk and opportunity register with owners, actions and review dates; treatments tracked to closure and brought to management review automatically.

Support

Competence, awareness and documented information

Training and competence records for every person, linked to Sterling Academy; documents with versions, approvals and distribution, so the current version is the only one in use.

Operation

Customer requirements, suppliers and delivery

Requirement reviews, supplier evaluation, service delivery, checks and release, each with its record created as the work is done.

Performance evaluation

Monitoring, internal audit and management review

Audit programmes, findings and follow-up; customer satisfaction and KPIs on live dashboards; a management review that records its inputs, decisions and actions.

Improvement

Nonconformity, complaints and corrective action

Raised, investigated and closed with root cause and the evidence that the action worked; recurring issues visible to management before they become a finding.

Across the system

Your own processes, forms and reports

Forms, fields, workflows and reports adapted to how you work, without code; legal and customer requirements tracked to the processes they affect.

What this means at the audit

The certification auditor asks for the internal audit programme, the last management review, the open nonconformities, the training records and the supplier evaluations. In Effivity each of those is a screen, with dates, owners and evidence attached, not a folder somebody has to assemble the week before the audit. After certification, Sustain™ runs in the same workspace, so surveillance audits find a system that never stopped.

In your engagement

  • Subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost
  • Configured by your Sterling consultant within the agreed scope
  • Your documents, records and registers migrated, not retyped
  • Admin and user training for your team

Sterling Academy · ISO 20252 e-learning

Sterling Academy delivers e-learning for the whole workforce and for the people who run the system: video lessons with practice checkpoints, a final exam and a numbered Certificate of Completion for each learner, verifiable online. Sterling consulting clients benefit from preferential course access and special pricing through their Sterling consultant, including complimentary awareness training for their people as part of the engagement.

  • Awareness training for every employee, with the evidence of competence your system needs
  • Practitioner courses for process owners and the person who leads the system
  • Internal auditor training for the people who will audit the system, as applicable to your standard, as part of the engagement
  • Learner progress by department and a training status report for the certification auditor

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about ISO 20252

What changed in ISO 20252:2026?

ISO published the fourth edition on 1 September 2026, replacing the 2019 edition; the detail of the changes was not reviewed for this page. Sterling compares your current system with the new edition during the gap review and closes what differs.

Does ISO 20252 cover online panels and data analytics?

Yes. Since the 2019 edition the standard has included access panel management and digital analytics, content that previously sat in ISO 26362 and ISO 19731.

Can a small research agency get ISO 20252 certified?

Yes. The system should match the size of the agency and the studies it runs; a small team needs clear project controls and records, not a large manual.
