- Direct marketing and other non-research activities are outside it.
- ISO 20252:2026 is the current edition.
Service requirements for research, insights and analytics
ISO 20252, Market, opinion and social research, including insights and data analytics, sets out vocabulary and service requirements for organisations that conduct research. It is maintained by ISO/TC 225. ISO describes it as covering every stage of a study, from the first contact between client and research provider to the presentation of results, and it states that non-research activities such as direct marketing fall outside it.
Earlier editions brought access panels and digital analytics into the standard, so a single standard now spans surveys, panels and analytics work. This short film walks through how a research provider implements it.
Since the 2019 edition the standard has also covered access panel management and digital analytics, content that previously sat in ISO 26362 and ISO 19731, and a small agency needs clear project controls and records rather than a large manual.
Building the system around the research project
Start by agreeing the scope: the research services, panels and analytics work to be covered, the offices and teams involved and what clients expect the certificate to say. A gap review against the current edition then compares how projects are run today with the service requirements for each stage, keeps what works and lists what is missing.
Implementation brings each stage of a project under control and makes it traceable: proposals and questionnaires signed off, sampling and fieldwork records kept, interviewer and panel checks carried out, data processing verified, reports traced back to the data and client feedback acted on with corrective actions. Process design keeps research and non-research activities apart, so the boundary of the system is clear. Internal audit and readiness review follow before an independent certification body assesses the system and decides.
Sterling's expert and experienced consultants support the gap review, process design and readiness with your research teams, with the evidence held in Effivity. ISO 20252:2026, the fourth edition, was published on 1 September 2026, replacing the 2019 edition, and implementations are checked against the 2026 text.
