ISO 17025 accreditation in India: the NABL route, its two-year cycle and what overseas customers check

Clause by clause: ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements: every clause explained →

What is different about ISO/IEC 17025 in India: NABL's application route, proficiency testing before grant, the 30-day corrective action period, reassessment every two years and how to confirm international acceptance.

Key points

  • Indian laboratories are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by NABL, the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, a constituent board of the Quality Council of India. NABCB, another QCI board, accredits certification and inspection bodies, not laboratories.
  • NABL's cycle is tighter than many overseas bodies: its FAQ describes annual surveillance, reassessment every two years and accreditation valid for four years, so the evidence has to keep flowing after the grant.
  • NABL asks applicants to take part successfully in at least one proficiency testing programme before grant, and gives 30 days to answer findings. Both shape the Indian timeline more than the paperwork does.
  • No Indian accreditation body appeared on the Global ACI list of recognised bodies when it was checked in September 2026. If overseas customers will rely on your reports, confirm NABL's current international standing first.

Why Indian laboratories pursue ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation

In India the question is rarely "should we have a quality system?" Most laboratories already have one. The question is whose name appears on the report. An export customer's supplier quality team, a buyer's incoming-inspection engineer or a project consultant reviewing material test results will often accept a figure only from a laboratory whose scope covers that test, and in India that means the NABL schedule.

Three groups drive most enquiries. Commercial testing laboratories need the NABL scope to be shortlisted at all. Calibration laboratories serve manufacturers whose own quality auditors ask for calibration certificates from accredited laboratories. In-house laboratories at exporters want their results accepted without a second test at an overseas laboratory. Some tenders and customer specifications ask for results from an accredited laboratory; read the exact wording of each document, because the requirement differs from one buyer to the next.

What the standard requires is covered in the requirements guide. This page deals only with what changes in India.

NABL accreditation: the application route

NABL's own FAQ sets out the sequence: application, review by the NABL secretariat, an optional pre-assessment, appointment of an assessment team, the on-site assessment, corrective action on the findings, then a decision by the Accreditation Committee and the issue of the accreditation certificate with its scope.

Three details from that FAQ matter when you plan. NABL speaks of accrediting a well-prepared laboratory in about 90 days; that is NABL's part only, after your methods, uncertainty budgets and records are already in place. Findings from the assessment have 30 days for corrective action, so the people who own each method must be available straight after the visit. And at least one successful proficiency testing result is expected before grant, which ties your start date to a provider's round calendar.

Laboratories are sometimes offered a "17025 certificate" by a certification body. That is misleading: laboratory competence is recognised through NABL's accreditation for a named scope, not through a management system certificate. The accreditation process guide walks through the assessment itself.

What changes an ISO/IEC 17025 project in India

A two-year reassessment rhythm

With surveillance every year and reassessment every second year, an Indian laboratory is visited by NABL assessors every year of its accreditation. Internal audits, management reviews and proficiency testing have to run on a calendar that anticipates those visits, not one that restarts after each. The surveillance and reassessment guide covers the cycle in general.

International acceptance of NABL reports

Global ACI replaced ILAC and the IAF on 1 January 2026, and its MRA took over from the ILAC MRA. Existing ILAC MRA accreditations continue to be recognised during the transition, yet no Indian body appeared on the Global ACI recognised list when we checked. If a customer abroad will act on your results, ask NABL to confirm its current standing in writing and keep that with the contract.

Scope written for Indian customers

Write the scope in the terms your customers specify: the product, the parameter, the method reference and the range they quote in purchase orders. A scope that names a method your key customer does not recognise gains nothing in tenders. See the scope of accreditation guide.

Multi-site groups and site testing

Groups with laboratories in several cities, or teams that test at customer or project sites, need every location and activity declared on the application. Assessors plan witnessing around those locations, and an undeclared site cannot carry the accreditation.

ISO 17025 accreditation in India: questions laboratories ask

Who grants ISO 17025 accreditation in India?

NABL, the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, grants it. NABL is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India and accredits laboratories for a defined scope of tests or calibrations.

How long does NABL accreditation take?

NABL speaks of about 90 days for a well-prepared laboratory, counting its own review, assessment and decision. Preparation comes first, so a whole first programme usually takes six to twelve months.

How often does NABL reassess an accredited laboratory?

Every two years, according to NABL's FAQ, with surveillance every year and accreditation valid for four years. Plan internal audits and proficiency testing around that rhythm.

ISO 17025 consultant in Mumbai: can you work with our laboratory on site?

Yes. Sterling's Navi Mumbai office supports laboratories in the Mumbai region on site, and laboratories in other Indian cities through planned visits and remote working.
