Implementation walkthrough
How to implement ISO 21001: video walkthrough
A walkthrough of implementing an ISO 21001 educational organisation management system with leadership and educators, in step with the academic calendar.
Key takeaways
- ISO 21001 is written for any organisation that uses a curriculum to develop competence.
- It shares the harmonised structure, so it integrates with ISO 9001 and other systems.
- Scope names the programmes, campuses and delivery modes covered.
- Evidence builds up through the academic cycle: design, assessment and feedback.
- ISO 21001 does not replace an education authority's own quality review.
A management system for educational organisations
ISO 21001 is the international standard for management systems for educational organisations, usually shortened to EOMS. It sets out what an organisation that uses a curriculum to develop competence needs in place to give learners and other beneficiaries what was promised: programmes designed to defined learning outcomes, competent educators, a learning environment fit for purpose, consistent assessment, protected learner data and feedback that leads to improvement.
It is a stand-alone standard aligned with ISO 9001 on the shared harmonised structure, so it integrates with a quality, information security or safety system the institution already runs. It applies regardless of type, size or method of delivery, from a primary school to a university faculty, a vocational institute or a corporate training function. This short film walks through how the system is implemented.
It suits any organisation that uses a curriculum to develop competence, from schools and universities to an online academy or a corporate training function.
From scope to certificate
Agree what the certificate will cover: the programmes, campuses, delivery modes and headcount, the regulator's or client's expectations and the intended scope. A gap analysis then compares how the institution admits, teaches, assesses and supports learners with the requirements, keeps what works and agrees actions with owners and dates.
Implementation brings programme design, delivery, assessment and learner support under agreed processes, with records of design decisions, assessment results and feedback building up as the academic cycle runs. Learner data protection, educator competence and the learning environment are addressed alongside. Internal audit and management review then test the system before an independent, accredited certification body assesses it and decides. Education authorities review quality in their own way, and ISO 21001 does not replace that review.

ISO 21001: questions people ask
Can a small school or a single training centre implement ISO 21001?
Yes. The system should be proportionate to your programmes, learners and risks. A small provider usually needs clear responsibilities, a defined way to design and assess each programme and a few practical records, not a thick set of procedures.
ISO 21001 or ISO 9001: which one does an educational organisation need?
ISO 21001 is a stand-alone management system standard aligned with ISO 9001 and written for organisations that teach. Where ISO 9001 speaks of customers and products, ISO 21001 speaks of learners and other beneficiaries, special needs, programme design, delivery and assessment, learners' data and the satisfaction of learners, beneficiaries and staff. If your core activity is education, ISO 21001 fits the work; a group that also sells other services can integrate the two.
Is ISO 21001 an accreditation of our degrees, diplomas or programmes?
No. ISO 21001 certification covers the organisation's management system, not the academic standing of a qualification. Recognition of degrees, licences to operate and programme accreditation stay with the education authorities and accrediting agencies in your jurisdiction; a well-run EOMS makes those reviews easier, but does not replace them.
Does Sterling issue the ISO 21001 certificate?
No. Sterling consults, trains and prepares; an independent, accredited certification body audits and decides. Anyone offering to do both is selling paper.
Does ISO 21001 apply to a corporate training department or an online academy?
Yes. The standard is intended for any organisation that uses a curriculum to develop competence, whatever the method of delivery, and can be applied to an educational unit within a larger organisation whose core business is not education; for a corporate academy the scope is usually the training function and its programmes.
