- Certification is offered by some independent certification bodies.
A common reference for hotel service quality
ISO 22483, Tourism and related services, Hotels, Service requirements, is published by ISO and developed by ISO/TC 228. It establishes quality requirements and recommendations for hotels on staff, service, events, entertainment activities, safety and security, maintenance, cleanliness, supply management and guest satisfaction. ISO presents it as a common, attainable reference developed with the world's different hotel types, categorisation systems, business models and sizes in mind.
The requirements apply to every hotel classification and category, and they apply whether a service is delivered by the hotel's own people or by an external contractor. This short film walks through how a hotel implements it.
It does not replace a star rating: ISO presents it as a common reference across the hotel categorisation systems in use worldwide, and the requirements apply whether services are delivered by the hotel's own staff or by external contractors, so contractor selection and oversight belong in the system.
From service standards to guest satisfaction
Implementation starts with the scope: the property or properties, the departments and services, and the contractors who deliver services on the hotel's behalf. A review of current practice against the areas the standard covers shows what already works and what needs to be set down or strengthened.
The work then builds department service standards and routines for reception, rooms, food and beverage, events and guest activities; safety and security arrangements that protect guests, staff and property; maintenance and cleanliness of rooms, public areas and equipment; purchasing and contractor management; and the measurement of guest satisfaction with action taken on the results. The evidence includes room inspection and cleaning checklists, maintenance logs, safety drills, contractor evaluations and guest satisfaction results. Internal audit and readiness review follow, and certification is by an independent certification body, where one offers it.
Sterling's expert and experienced consultants support the service standards, routines and records with your teams, with the evidence held in Effivity. ISO 22483:2020, the first edition, was confirmed by ISO after systematic review on 5 March 2026.

ISO 22483: questions people ask
Does ISO 22483 replace a hotel star rating?
No. ISO presents it as a common reference across the different hotel categorisation systems in use worldwide, and star classification stays with whichever scheme awards it in your country.
Are outsourced hotel services covered by ISO 22483?
Yes. ISO states that the requirements apply whether services are delivered by the hotel's own personnel or by external contractors, so contractor selection and oversight belong in the system.
Does Sterling issue the ISO 22483 certificate?
No. Sterling provides consulting and hands-on support. An independent certification body audits the hotel and makes the certification decision.
