ISO and GRC certification in New York at a glance
New York certification work tends to start with someone else's questionnaire. A bank sends a vendor-risk review, a hospital asks for a security attestation, a distributor at Hunts Point needs proof of food-safety control, and a landlord looks at Local Law 97. The Comptroller counts more securities-industry jobs here than in any other US city, the Port Authority's terminals and airports move goods through the region, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard houses lab, food, electronics and energy businesses. Sterling's New York office helps companies in all five boroughs turn those requests into working management systems: ISO standards, SOC reports, HIPAA and PCI DSS programmes, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement. The certificate or report is issued by an accredited certification body, CPA firm or assessor that you appoint. Choose a standard below to see how it applies in the city.
New York City is the country's densest financial centre and one of its busiest trading gateways. The State Comptroller counts a record number of securities-industry jobs in the city, the Port Authority runs the regional port and airports, and Hunts Point in the Bronx holds one of the largest food distribution centres in the world. Industrial pockets in Brooklyn add manufacturing and laboratory space.

Questions New York clients ask
Who supports ISO and GRC projects for companies in New York?
Sterling's New York office, which handles engagements across all five boroughs. Teams meet clients on site for workshops and readiness reviews, then continue online. Effivity and Sterling Academy come with every engagement. Sterling prepares the company, while the certificate, report or attestation is issued by whichever accredited certification body, CPA firm or assessor the client appoints.
Why do New York financial firms ask for SOC 2 or ISO 27001?
Because the city holds more securities-industry jobs than any other US city, according to the State Comptroller, and those firms review the security of every vendor they use. A SOC 2 report or an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate gives a supplier independent evidence to hand over. Which one a client wants depends on its own vendor policy.
Which parts of New York need food-safety systems?
Hunts Point in the Bronx is the obvious one: its food distribution centre covers 329 acres and the Fulton Fish Market moved there in 2005. Elsewhere, any establishment doing a specialised process such as vacuum packing or curing must submit a HACCP plan to the Health Department. Confirm the permit route with the Department for your premises.
What does Local Law 97 mean for building owners in New York?
Certain buildings must stay under annual greenhouse gas emissions limits set by Local Law 97, which the Department of Buildings administers. The law does not ask for ISO 50001, but an energy management system gives owners data and a routine for finding reductions. Check with the Department whether your building is covered.
