SOC 1 attestation in New York at a glance

Behind many New York balance sheets are outsourced processes: a payroll run, a fund's unit pricing, a custodian's reconciliations, a managing agent's rent collections. The clients' auditors have to rely on those processes without testing them each year, and SOC 1 is how they do it. A CPA firm examines the service organisation's description of its system and the design, and where Type 2 applies the operation, of controls relevant to user entities' financial reporting. The report is not a certificate but an attestation. Sterling's New York office helps the provider define control objectives, document and test controls, and close gaps before the CPA firm starts fieldwork. Local questions follow.

SOC 1 in New York: questions clients ask

Why are New York fund administrators asked for SOC 1?

Because their clients' auditors need assurance about outsourced processes that affect financial statements. A SOC 1 report prepared by a CPA firm describes the service organisation's controls and tests them, so the auditor need not examine each process directly. Whether Type 1 or Type 2 is needed depends on the client.

How is SOC 1 different from SOC 2 for a New York provider?

SOC 1 addresses controls relevant to a client's financial reporting; SOC 2 covers security and related criteria such as availability and confidentiality. A payroll processor may need SOC 1 for customer auditors and SOC 2 for customer security teams, so the real question is who is reading the report.
