In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in the UK at a glance

UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement requires ISO/IEC 17025 for the organisations it covers. Most UK buyers ask for it anyway.

UKAS is the only body the UK Government recognises to accredit UK laboratories and other conformity assessment bodies, having been appointed sole national accreditation body under the Accreditation Regulations 2009. Where testing has to be accredited to show compliance with legislation, government specifies UKAS-accredited laboratories, and forensic service providers must hold accreditation to EN ISO/IEC 17025. Recognition travels: UKAS is a full signatory member of the European co-operation for Accreditation and of Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, which replaced ILAC and IAF at the start of 2026, so UKAS-accredited results are accepted as technically equivalent by other signatories. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is granted by UKAS after assessment of impartiality, competence, method validation, measurement uncertainty and proficiency testing; no consultant can award it. Sterling supports testing and calibration laboratories from its London office with the quality manual, procedures, uncertainty budgets, validation records and internal audits assessors expect.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in the UK, and what happens without it

For some organisations in the UK it is a legal requirement. For most, the question comes from a buyer, a regulator or a partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Testing and calibration laboratories seeking national accreditationUKAS is the UK's sole national accreditation body and the only one the Government recognises for UK conformity assessment bodies.
  • Forensic service providersThe UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement requires forensic laboratory activities to be accredited to EN ISO/IEC 17025 by the national accreditation body.
  • Laboratories whose results support regulationGovernment specifies UKAS-accredited laboratories where accredited testing is required to demonstrate compliance.
  • Industrial and life sciences laboratories in the FreeportsCustomers rely on accredited test and calibration results.

ISO 17025 requirements in the UK

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In the UK these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in the UK?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In the UK these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of tests or calibrations in the requested scope
  • Availability of method validation and measurement uncertainty data
  • Proficiency testing or interlaboratory comparison results
  • UKAS assessment scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in the UK?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In the UK these factors move both.

  • Size of the accreditation scope
  • UKAS application and assessment fees, separate from consulting
  • Equipment calibration and reference materials
  • Staff competence records and training

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in the UK

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in the UK are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

ISO 17025 in the UK: questions clients ask

Who accredits laboratories in the UK?

UKAS is the answer. The Accreditation Regulations 2009 appointed it as the UK's sole national accreditation body, and Government recognition for UK conformity assessment bodies runs only through UKAS. A laboratory wanting national recognition for testing or calibration therefore applies to UKAS, not to a commercial certification body.

    Is ISO 17025 a certification?

No, it is accreditation. UKAS grants it after assessing a laboratory's competence, and the assessment includes on-site witnessing of tests or calibrations, though some document review may be remote at UKAS's discretion. A certification body does not issue ISO 17025.

    Are UKAS-accredited results accepted abroad?

Generally, yes. UKAS is a full signatory member of EA and of Global ACI, which replaced ILAC and IAF from 1 January 2026, so its accreditation sits within the international arrangements. Whether a particular foreign customer or regulator accepts a given result is its own decision, so ask it before relying on that.
