ISO 45001 certification in the UK at a glance
HSE Managing for health and safety (HSG65) refers to ISO 45001, yet none of the UK instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in the UK ask for it anyway.
HSE's guide Managing for health and safety, known as HSG65, names ISO 45001 among the standards an organisation can use and leaves no doubt that the decision is the organisation's own. It also poses the question buyers ask next: if a formal system is used, has it been externally certified, and is that certification accredited? The guide's Plan, Do, Check, Act approach matches the structure of ISO 45001, which makes the standard a natural way to evidence how risk is controlled, workers are consulted and incidents are investigated. Demand is strongest in construction, engineering, facilities management and heavy industry, including the chemicals and energy clusters around Teesside and the Humber, where clients and principal contractors assess safety management before awarding work. Certification is granted by a certification body accredited by UKAS or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements. Sterling's London office builds the system, often integrated with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
Who needs ISO 45001 in the UK, and what happens without it
In the UK the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Construction, engineering and facilities firmsHSE guidance lists ISO 45001 among formal systems an organisation may use and asks whether certification is accredited.
- Manufacturers, chemicals and energy firms in Teesside and the HumberHeavy industry and offshore energy clusters carry high hazard profiles.
- Contractors bidding for public and private frameworksBuyers assess health and safety management; equivalents must be allowed in public procurement.
- Organisations integrating safety with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001Common structure supports one management system.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 45001 requires a company to prove six things about keeping its people safe and healthy at work.
In the UK these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 45001 explained →

How long does ISO 45001 certification take in the UK?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In the UK these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites, projects and contractors in scope
- Hazard identification and risk assessment maturity
- Worker consultation and participation arrangements
- Incident investigation and internal audit records before stage 2
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 45001 certification cost in the UK?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In the UK these factors move both.
- Sites and temporary project locations
- High-risk activities requiring specific controls
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 45001 consultants and certification bodies in the UK
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 45001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in the UK are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

ISO 45001 in the UK: questions clients ask
Does HSE require ISO 45001?
No. HSG65, the HSE's guidance on managing for health and safety, lists ISO 45001 among standards an organisation may use, and states that whether to use one is the organisation's own decision. If a formal system is used, HSG65 asks whether it has been externally certified and whether that certification is accredited. Your legal duties as an employer apply regardless.
Is ISO 45001 accepted in place of CHAS or SafeContractor?
Whichever your buyer chooses. CHAS and SafeContractor are separate supplier assessment schemes, and acceptance of ISO 45001 in their place is the buyer's decision, not a rule. The CHAS, SafeContractor and Achilles hub compares them. Ask each client or framework what evidence it accepts before you decide.
Which accreditation should our certification body have?
A UKAS-accredited one, or one accredited by another body within the international mutual recognition arrangements. HSG65 itself asks whether certification is accredited, so buyers who have read it may ask the same. Before appointing anyone, check that the body's scope extends to ISO 45001 and to your sector.
