In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in the UAE at a glance

In the UAE, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

UAE laboratories can seek ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from either of two government accreditation bodies. The Emirates National Accreditation System (ENAS), under the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, is the national body accrediting testing and calibration laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025, alongside inspection, product certification and halal certification bodies. The Emirates International Accreditation Centre (EIAC) in Dubai is an ILAC MRA signatory whose scope covers testing, calibration, medical testing and inspection. The choice usually follows the laboratory's customers and the regulator its results serve. Accreditation is granted by the accreditation body after assessment of competence, impartiality, method validation, measurement uncertainty and proficiency testing; no consultant can award it. Sterling prepares laboratories from its Dubai office: the quality manual and procedures, uncertainty budgets, validation records and internal audits that assessors expect. The local route and questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in the UAE, and what happens without it

In the UAE the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Testing and calibration laboratories seeking national accreditationENAS accredits testing and calibration laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Laboratories serving customers who want an ILAC-recognised accreditationEIAC is an ILAC MRA signatory covering testing and calibration.
  • Industrial and food laboratories in free zonesCustomers and regulators rely on accredited test reports.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in the UAE

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In the UAE these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in the UAE?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In the UAE these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of tests or calibrations in the requested scope
  • Availability of method validation and uncertainty data
  • Proficiency testing results available before assessment

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in the UAE?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In the UAE these factors move both.

  • Size of the accreditation scope
  • Accreditation body application and assessment fees, separate from consulting
  • Equipment calibration and reference material needs

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in the UAE

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in the UAE are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

ISO 17025 in the UAE: questions clients ask

Which body accredits laboratories in the UAE?

Two bodies are relevant. ENAS, under the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, is the UAE national accreditation body and accredits testing and calibration laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025. EIAC in Dubai is an ILAC MRA signatory whose scope covers calibration, testing, medical testing, inspection and proficiency testing providers. Choose according to the scope you need.

    Is ISO 17025 a certification?

No. ISO 17025 leads to accreditation, which an accreditation body grants after assessing a laboratory's competence, rather than to a certificate from a certification body. The decision rests with the accreditation body you apply to, so treat the process as an assessment of what your laboratory can do.

    What do assessors check?

Assessors check technical competence, impartiality, method validation, measurement uncertainty and proficiency testing. Expect them to examine the evidence behind each test or calibration in your requested scope, not only your documents, so keep validation and uncertainty records ready for review.
