In short

ISO 27001 certification in Dubai at a glance

Information security in Dubai is asked for by name in several places. The Dubai Electronic Security Centre develops the Information Security Regulation for Dubai Government entities and certain critical non-government entities, and it certifies the private electronic security companies they may engage. DIFC firms and Dubai Healthcare City providers carry client and patient data, and Dubai Silicon Oasis hosts cybersecurity and technology companies whose enterprise buyers ask for ISO/IEC 27001 certificates at procurement. An accredited certification body issues the certificate; it does not replace a regulator's requirement. Sterling's Dubai office scopes the system around the sites, cloud services and suppliers you actually use, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. National frameworks are on the UAE page.

What ISO 27001 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.

You know what you are protectingThe scope is defined: the information, systems, locations and people that matter, and who inside and outside relies on them.
Management owns itTop management sets the information security policy and objectives, assigns roles and gives the effort the resources it needs.
You decided what could go wrong, and what to do about itSecurity risks are assessed against agreed criteria, and each is treated with a recorded choice of safeguards and the reasons for it.
The safeguards work every dayAccess, suppliers, devices, backups, incidents and staff awareness are managed as routine operations, not one-off projects.
You can show itPolicies, risk decisions and records are kept, so an auditor sees the system working in practice rather than on paper.
You check yourselvesSecurity performance is measured, internal audits and management reviews take place, and what they find is put right.

ISO 27001 in Dubai: questions clients ask

Who sets information security rules for Dubai Government suppliers?

The Dubai Electronic Security Centre. It develops the Information Security Regulation for Dubai Government entities and certain critical non-government entities, and entities may not engage a private electronic security company unless DESC has certified it. The regulation, not ISO/IEC 27001, is the requirement; confirm the current text with DESC.

Which Dubai zones hold the firms most asked for ISO/IEC 27001?

Dubai Silicon Oasis, which lists cybersecurity and emerging technology among its clusters, and DIFC, home to regulated financial firms. Their customers ask for evidence of how data is protected. Which evidence is acceptable is set by each customer or regulator, so ask before you scope.
