ISO 17025 accreditation in Uganda at a glance
In Uganda, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Laboratory accreditation in Uganda is changing. The Uganda National Accreditation Service now runs a testing and calibration scheme based on ISO/IEC 17025, and the trade ministry stated that it became an Associate Member of the African Accreditation Cooperation on 15 May 2024, after years in which accredited facilities relied on foreign accreditation bodies. UGANAS's international recognition page shows no signatory status, so a laboratory serving export buyers should check which accreditation those buyers accept. Either way, ISO/IEC 17025 requires impartiality, competent staff, validated methods, measurement uncertainty, traceable calibration and proficiency testing. Accreditation is granted by the accreditation body, never by a certification body or by Sterling. Sterling's Nairobi office prepares food, agricultural, industrial and calibration laboratories method by method, with Effivity tracking equipment and records.
Who needs ISO 17025 in Uganda, and what happens without it
In Uganda the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Testing and calibration laboratoriesUGANAS runs its testing and calibration scheme against ISO/IEC 17025.
- Food, agricultural and export testing laboratoriesThe trade ministry links accredited testing to export access.
- Laboratories currently accredited by a foreign bodyThe trade ministry said in 2025 that UGANAS aims to lower the cost of accreditation that facilities have sourced abroad.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.
In Uganda these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Uganda?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Uganda these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of methods and parameters in the requested scope
- Method validation and measurement uncertainty records
- Proficiency testing or interlaboratory comparison results
- Accreditation body assessment scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Uganda?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Uganda these factors move both.
- Scope of methods and sites
- Equipment calibration and reference materials
- Proficiency testing participation
- Accreditation body fees quoted separately
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Uganda
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Uganda are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Uganda
Laboratories are accredited, not certified: an accreditation body assesses a laboratory against ISO/IEC 17025 for the methods in its scope. In Uganda that is the Uganda National Accreditation Service (UGANAS), whose scheme is based on ISO/IEC 17025, or a foreign accreditation body. Accreditation bodies work within an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA) alongside the ILAC arrangement; UGANAS's international recognition page shows no signatory status, so check which accreditation your customers and regulators accept. Sterling does not accredit. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 17025 hub →
Audit language
English is the usual language of laboratory records, methods and reports in Uganda; agree the assessment language and any interpreter with the accreditation body.
Remote and on-site
Accreditation assessments are on-site, with witnessing of tests or calibrations; some document review can be remote.
ISO 17025 in Uganda: questions clients ask
Who accredits laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025 in Uganda?
The Uganda National Accreditation Service, whose testing and calibration scheme is based on ISO/IEC 17025, or a foreign accreditation body chosen by the laboratory. A certification body cannot grant laboratory accreditation, and neither can Sterling. Choose the accreditation that your customers, buyers abroad and regulators actually recognise.
Is UGANAS recognised internationally?
Its own international recognition page shows no signatory status. The trade ministry stated that UGANAS became an Associate Member of the African Accreditation Cooperation on 15 May 2024. Laboratories serving export customers should check which accreditation those customers accept, which may still be a foreign body for now.
Why have Ugandan laboratories used foreign accreditation bodies?
Because, as the trade ministry put it in 2025, accredited facilities had relied on foreign accreditation bodies before UGANAS was established, at a cost the ministry wants to reduce. A laboratory can now weigh UGANAS against a foreign body by looking at recognition, scope and customer acceptance.
What usually takes longest in an ISO/IEC 17025 project?
Technical evidence. Each method needs validation or verification and a measurement uncertainty estimate, equipment needs traceable calibration, and proficiency testing results must be available. A wide scope multiplies the work, so many laboratories start with their most requested tests and extend the scope later.
