FSSC 22000 certification in Uganda at a glance
In Uganda, FSSC 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
International food brands sourcing from Uganda often name FSSC 22000 in their supplier rules, because Foundation FSSC presents it as a GFSI-recognised scheme. It takes ISO 22000 and adds prerequisite programmes for the relevant food chain category plus scheme requirements such as food defence and fraud mitigation, with unannounced audits to keep the system accurate. The Uganda National Bureau of Standards enforces national food standards, many harmonised with Codex, but the scheme itself is a buyer requirement. Certificates come from certification bodies licensed by the scheme owner and accredited for it, and since most bodies serving Uganda hold foreign accreditation, the licence and scope deserve a check. Sterling does not certify. Sterling's Nairobi office prepares plants on-site, with Effivity tracking prerequisite records and corrective actions.
Who needs FSSC 22000 in Uganda, and what happens without it
In Uganda the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food manufacturers supplying international brandsMultinational buyers often require a GFSI-recognised scheme such as FSSC 22000.
- Exporters of processed foodThe trade ministry links accredited conformity assessment to export access.
- Processors already holding ISO 22000FSSC 22000 adds prerequisite programme and scheme requirements on top of ISO 22000.

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.
In Uganda these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Uganda?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Uganda these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of food chain categories and sites
- Prerequisite programmes against the relevant technical specification
- Scheme additional requirements such as food defence and fraud
- Licensed certification body availability
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Uganda?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Uganda these factors move both.
- Number of sites and product categories
- Infrastructure and hygiene upgrades
- Laboratory testing and environmental monitoring
- Certification body fees quoted separately
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Uganda
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Uganda are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Uganda
FSSC 22000 certificates come from certification bodies licensed by the scheme owner, so check the body's scheme licence as well as its accreditation. Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), or by the Uganda National Accreditation Service (UGANAS) where its accreditation scope covers the standard; check that the scope covers your sector. Many bodies serving Uganda hold foreign accreditation, so ask for the accreditation certificate, scope and scheme licence. Edition and transition details: FSSC 22000 hub →
Audit language
English is the language of Uganda's Acts of Parliament, regulators' guidance and most business records; interviews with operators or suppliers may need an interpreter for a local language. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
FSSC 22000 audits are on-site and the scheme includes unannounced audits; document review can be partly remote.
FSSC 22000 in Uganda: questions clients ask
Why would a Ugandan processor choose FSSC 22000 over ISO 22000?
Because many international buyers want a GFSI-recognised scheme, and Foundation FSSC describes FSSC 22000 as one. It builds on ISO 22000 with prerequisite programme and scheme requirements. If your customers accept ISO 22000 alone, the extra scope may not be needed, so ask them first.
Who can issue an FSSC 22000 certificate in Uganda?
A certification body licensed by the scheme owner and accredited for the scheme. Check both the licence and the accreditation scope; because most bodies serving Uganda carry foreign accreditation, ask for the certificates and confirm the body appears on the scheme owner's register.
Does UNBS require FSSC 22000?
No. UNBS develops and enforces national standards, many harmonised with Codex, and certifies products, but the material cited does not mention FSSC 22000. The scheme is a buyer requirement, not a national rule. Check product standards for your category with UNBS separately.
What extra work does FSSC 22000 add for a Ugandan plant?
Prerequisite programmes must meet the technical specification for your food chain category, and the scheme adds requirements such as food defence and food fraud mitigation. Unannounced audits mean the system must hold up every day, not just on audit dates.
