In short

ISO 14001 certification in Türkiye at a glance

In Türkiye, ISO 14001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Türkiye's Climate Law, No. 7552, took effect on 9 July 2025 with a net zero emissions aim and provision for an Emissions Trading System, and that has put emissions data and environmental discipline on more factory agendas. ISO 14001 is not required by it, but textile exporters answering brand codes, automotive suppliers and plants in organised industrial zones are routinely asked whether they hold it. Contracting authorities under the Public Procurement Law may also ask for certificates from accredited institutions in a given tender. Certification comes from a body accredited by TÜRKAK, which Global ACI shows as recognised for ISO 14001 since 2008, or by another body within the international arrangements. Sterling's Dubai office helps with aspects registers, legal-requirements registers and internal audits, on-site or remotely, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

The need

Who needs ISO 14001 in Türkiye, and what happens without it

In Türkiye the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Textile, apparel and leather exporters answering brand environmental codesBrand and retailer customers ask suppliers for an environmental management system, although no Turkish statute makes ISO 14001 compulsory.
  • Energy-intensive manufacturers facing the Climate LawThe Climate Law provides for emission reduction and an Emissions Trading System, so emissions data and management discipline matter.
  • Automotive suppliersVehicle makers commonly ask their supply chain for ISO 14001 alongside the quality system.
  • Contractors and suppliers bidding for public tendersA contracting authority may ask for certificates from accredited institutions, and says so in the tender document.
  • Plants in organised industrial zones and free zonesZone plants meet waste, water and emission questions from customers and neighbours as well as authorities.

Requirements

ISO 14001 requirements in Türkiye

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 14001 requires a company to prove six things about how its activities affect the environment.

You know your environmental impactsYou have identified how your activities, products and services interact with the environment and which of those impacts are significant.
You know the rules that applyEnvironmental laws, permits and other commitments that apply to you are identified, and you check regularly that you meet them.
Leadership commits to protecting the environmentTop management sets an environmental policy that commits to preventing pollution and meeting obligations, with objectives to deliver it.
Significant impacts are under controlOperations linked to significant impacts are planned and controlled, taking a life-cycle view of what you buy, make and deliver.
You are ready for an incidentPotential environmental emergencies such as spills or releases are identified, and the response is planned and tested where practicable.
You track performance and improveEnvironmental performance is monitored, compliance is evaluated, and the system is audited and reviewed by management to improve.

In Türkiye these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 14001 explained →

How Sterling gets a Turkish company certified

Time

How long does ISO 14001 certification take in Türkiye?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Türkiye these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Identification of environmental aspects and legal requirements across sites
  • Time to gather emissions, waste and energy data
  • Number of plants and contractors in scope
  • Certification body scheduling around holiday periods

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 14001 certification cost in Türkiye?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Türkiye these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and processes with significant aspects
  • Monitoring, measurement and any compliance gaps to close
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
  • Combination with ISO 45001 or ISO 50001

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 14001 consultants and certification bodies in Türkiye

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 14001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Türkiye are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 14001 in Türkiye (3)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
TÜRKAK recognition entries (Global ACI)Market driver
Global ACI shows TÜRKAK recognised for management systems certification to ISO 14001 from 20 October 2008, so an accredited local route exists; this is not a mandate.
Climate Law No. 7552Context
Accepted on 2 July 2025 and in force from its publication on 9 July 2025, it aims at net zero emissions and provides for emission reduction and an Emissions Trading System; it does not require ISO 14001.
Public Procurement Law No. 4734 and the Public Procurement AuthorityDoes not make the standard compulsory
A contracting authority may ask for certificates from accredited quality control institutions, and the tender documents say which.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Türkiye

Use a certification body accredited for ISO 14001 by TÜRKAK or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Global ACI lists TÜRKAK as recognised for ISO 14001 management systems certification from October 2008. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Audit language

Turkish is the usual working language and the audit is normally run in it; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and say early if records will be in English.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; plants and operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 14001 in Türkiye: questions clients ask

Does ISO 14001 satisfy the Climate Law?

No. Climate Law No. 7552 provides for emission reduction and an Emissions Trading System, and a management system certificate does not discharge any duty under it. ISO 14001 helps by organising aspects, legal requirements and monitoring. Ask counsel or the Ministry which obligations reach your installation, as they sit in regulations made under the Law.

Which body certifies an environmental management system?

Certification is carried out by a body that is itself accredited, and TÜRKAK is the national accreditation body whose ISO 14001 recognition Global ACI dates to October 2008. Sterling only prepares you. Compare candidates on accreditation scope, sector experience and audit approach, and request the accreditation certificate before agreeing a plan.

Do textile exporters need ISO 14001?

Only if their customers ask. No Turkish law requires it, but brand and retailer supplier codes often request an environmental management system, and some prefer an independently certified one. Read the code of conduct or supplier agreement first, and ask whether another recognised scheme would satisfy the customer instead.

Can ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 be audited together?

Often, yes. Many certification bodies offer a combined audit of two or more management system standards, which saves effort where documents such as management review and internal audit are shared. The body decides whether and how to combine them, so ask at application and confirm that each standard appears on the certificate.
