IATF 16949 certification in Türkiye at a glance
In Türkiye, IATF 16949 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Which supplier gets the next nomination? For a Turkish casting house, stamping line or wiring-harness maker, the answer often depends on whether IATF 16949 is on the vehicle maker's list. The IATF publishes the rules, certification bodies under contract with it and each customer's specific requirements; Turkish law does not require the certificate, and Global ACI's entry for TÜRKAK shows no IATF 16949 line, so the certificate comes from an IATF-recognised body. The Uludağ Automotive Industry Exporters' Association speaks for the export-oriented supply chain, and many suppliers work from organised industrial zones where one plant serves several customers. Sterling prepares the system from its Dubai office, on-site where manufacturing processes need walking and remotely for documents, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included; the contracted certification body audits and decides.
Who needs IATF 16949 in Türkiye, and what happens without it
In Türkiye the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Tier-one and tier-two suppliers to vehicle makersVehicle makers set which suppliers must hold IATF 16949, and they publish customer-specific requirements on top of the standard.
- Component makers moving from ISO 9001 to automotive certificationA first customer nomination often triggers the move, and ISO 9001 experience carries over only in part.
- Foundries, stampers and plastics mouldersProcess-heavy suppliers face core-tool expectations such as control plans and measurement system analysis from their customers.
- Suppliers with plants in organised industrial zonesZone-based plants often serve several customers at once, so one system must satisfy several sets of customer-specific requirements.

Strip away the vocabulary and IATF 16949 asks a supplier to prove six things about supplying vehicle makers without defects.
In Türkiye these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: IATF 16949 explained →

How long does IATF 16949 certification take in Türkiye?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Türkiye these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Customer-specific requirements to map for each automotive customer
- Core-tool evidence such as control plans, process capability and measurement system analysis
- Number of manufacturing and remote-support sites
- Certification body scheduling around holiday periods and customer shutdowns
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does IATF 16949 certification cost in Türkiye?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Türkiye these factors move both.
- Number of sites, shifts and product families in scope
- Depth of core-tool and process audit evidence still to build
- IATF-recognised certification body audit fees, quoted separately
- Internal auditor and product auditor training
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
IATF 16949 consultants and certification bodies in Türkiye
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers IATF 16949 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Türkiye are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive IATF 16949 in Türkiye (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| IATF Global Oversight — certification bodies and customer requirements | Scheme rule The IATF site lists certification bodies under contract with the IATF, rules, customer-specific requirements and OEM requirement communiqués; certification is expected by customers, not by Turkish law. |
| Uludağ Automotive Industry Exporters' Association (OİB) | Market driver The association represents automotive exporters and publishes export figures; the automotive export base is why customer-driven certification is common among Turkish suppliers. |
| TÜRKAK recognition entries (Global ACI) | Accreditation Global ACI's TÜRKAK entry shows ISO 9001 and the IAQG 9100 series but no IATF 16949 line; IATF certification bodies are those under contract with the IATF. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Türkiye
IATF 16949 certificates are issued by certification bodies that hold a contract with the IATF, not by Sterling; Global ACI's TÜRKAK entry shows no IATF 16949 line, so check the IATF's list of certification bodies and the body's scope for your sector. The IATF's rules and your customers' specific requirements decide what the audit covers. Edition and transition details: IATF 16949 hub →
Audit language
Turkish is the usual working language and the audit is normally run in it; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and say early if records will be in English.
Remote and on-site
Audits are run by IATF-recognised certification bodies under the IATF rules, which set when remote elements are allowed; manufacturing sites are visited on-site.
IATF 16949 in Türkiye: questions clients ask
Do Turkish automotive suppliers need IATF 16949?
Only if their customers say so. No Turkish law requires it; the IATF publishes the rules and vehicle makers publish customer-specific requirements stating which suppliers must be certified. Ask each customer's supplier quality team in writing which standard and which edition of the requirements apply before you plan the project.
Is the certificate issued by TÜRKAK?
No. TÜRKAK is the national accreditation body, and Global ACI's entry for it shows ISO 9001 and the IAQG 9100 series but no IATF 16949 line. IATF 16949 certificates come from certification bodies under contract with the IATF. Sterling does not certify; check the IATF's list for a body that covers your sector.
How much of an ISO 9001 system carries over to IATF 16949?
A good deal of the documentation, internal audit and management review structure carries over, but IATF 16949 adds automotive process requirements, customer-specific requirements, product safety, supplier management and core-tool evidence. Expect to extend the system rather than reuse it unchanged, and to audit manufacturing processes, not only the paperwork.
Can an organised industrial zone plant hold IATF 16949 for several customers?
Yes, one certificate can serve several customers, but the system has to satisfy each customer's specific requirements, and customers can add their own supplier assessments. Zone-based plants usually serve more than one vehicle maker, so keep a register of customer-specific requirements and review it at each management review.
