In short

ISO 50001 certification in Türkiye at a glance

In Türkiye, ISO 50001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Energy bills, an emissions trading system and customer carbon questions are pulling the same data out of Turkish factories. The Climate Law of July 2025 aims at net zero and provides for an Emissions Trading System, while the older Energy Efficiency Law remains the framework for efficiency. Neither requires ISO 50001; the standard simply gives plants a disciplined energy review, baseline, indicators and improvement plan that auditors can test. Global ACI shows TÜRKAK recognised for ISO 50001 certification since January 2020, so an accredited local route exists. Plants in organised industrial zones and free zones often share utilities and metering, which affects scope. Sterling's Dubai office helps teams build the system, on-site or remotely, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 50001 in Türkiye, and what happens without it

In Türkiye the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Energy-intensive manufacturersFuel and electricity cost is a large share of cost, and an energy management system gives structure to saving it.
  • Plants facing the Climate Law and emissions pricingThe Climate Law provides for an Emissions Trading System, which raises the value of reliable energy and emissions data.
  • Exporters answering customer carbon questionsCustomers ask suppliers for energy performance and carbon data.
  • Plants in organised industrial zones and free zonesZone operators and tenants share utilities, and metering discipline pays off.

Requirements

ISO 50001 requirements in Türkiye

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 50001 requires a company to prove six things about how it manages and improves energy performance.

You know where the energy goesAn energy review shows how energy is used and consumed and identifies the areas of significant energy use.
Baselines and indicators are setEnergy performance is measured against a baseline using indicators that suit your operations.
Leadership commits to improvementTop management sets an energy policy, objectives and targets, and appoints a team with authority to act.
Significant uses are controlledOperation, maintenance and design affecting significant energy uses follow defined criteria, and energy is considered in purchasing.
Data is collected and checkedEnergy data is planned, measured and analysed so that improvement can be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Performance actually improvesAction plans are delivered, results are evaluated, and the system is audited and reviewed so energy performance keeps improving.

In Türkiye these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 50001 explained →

How Sterling gets a Turkish company certified

How to get ISO 50001 certified in Türkiye

One team from the Dubai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Türkiye are served from Sterling's Dubai office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO 50001 and the Turkish requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 50001 certification take in Türkiye?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Türkiye these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Energy review, baseline and energy performance indicators to establish
  • Metering and submetering to install
  • Number of sites and energy-using processes in scope
  • Certification body scheduling around holiday periods and production cycles

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 50001 certification cost in Türkiye?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Türkiye these factors move both.

  • Number of sites, meters and significant energy uses
  • Metering, monitoring software and efficiency improvements
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
  • Combination with ISO 14001

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 50001 consultants and certification bodies in Türkiye

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 50001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Türkiye are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 50001 in Türkiye (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
TÜRKAK recognition entries (Global ACI)Market driver
Global ACI shows TÜRKAK recognised for ISO 50001 (with ISO 50003) management systems certification from 8 January 2020, so an accredited local route exists; this is not a mandate.
Energy Efficiency Law No. 5627 and Climate Law No. 7552Framework laws
The Energy Efficiency Law (Official Gazette of 2 May 2007) and the Climate Law (Official Gazette of 9 July 2025, with an Emissions Trading System) set the national frame; duties for a given enterprise sit in regulations made under them, and ISO 50001 does not replace them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Türkiye

Use a certification body accredited for ISO 50001 by TÜRKAK or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Global ACI lists TÜRKAK as recognised for ISO 50001 management systems certification, with ISO 50003, from January 2020. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Audit language

Turkish is the usual working language and the audit is normally run in it; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and say early if records will be in English.

    Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; plants and operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 50001 in Türkiye: questions clients ask

Does ISO 50001 replace obligations under the Energy Efficiency Law?

No. The Energy Efficiency Law and its regulations set duties that apply whether or not you are certified, and a certificate does not discharge them. ISO 50001 organises the energy review, baseline, indicators and improvement actions so that you can show results. Ask the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources or counsel which obligations reach your plant.

Who may issue an ISO 50001 certificate in Türkiye?

Certification is by an accredited body, not Sterling, and the accreditation that matters is for ISO 50001 energy management systems, which Global ACI shows TÜRKAK holding together with ISO 50003 since January 2020. Candidates accredited elsewhere may also serve Turkish plants. Ask for the accreditation certificate and check the scope fits your industry.

How does the Climate Law relate to ISO 50001?

The Climate Law aims at net zero and provides for emission reduction and an Emissions Trading System, while ISO 50001 is a voluntary system for managing energy performance. Better metering and baselines make emissions reporting easier, but the certificate is not a compliance route. Check the regulations that apply to your installation.

What evidence do auditors look for?

They look for an energy review identifying significant energy uses, a baseline and performance indicators, objectives with action plans, operational controls, monitoring and measurement, internal audit and management review. Real meter data and documented improvements carry more weight than policies, so start metering early.
