ISO 37301 certification in Tanzania at a glance
In Tanzania, ISO 37301 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Compliance teams in Tanzania now track a growing list: Personal Data Protection Act duties enforced by the Personal Data Protection Commission, sector rules such as the Bank of Tanzania's 2026 draft cybersecurity guidelines, and licence conditions from regulators in mining, energy, health and food. ISO 37301 organises that list into a compliance management system with an obligations register, owners, controls, monitoring and board reporting. Banks, payment providers and multi-sector groups are the natural users, and the standard sits well beside ISO 37001 for bribery risk. SADCAS's recognition does not list ISO 37301, so certificates usually carry accreditation from another economy, issued by an accredited certification body. Sterling builds the register and the controls with your team from its Nairobi office, drawing on 20+ years of practice, with Effivity to track obligations and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 37301 in Tanzania, and what happens without it
In Tanzania the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Banks and payment providersFinancial service providers juggle Bank of Tanzania expectations, data protection duties and anti-money-laundering rules.
- Organisations registered with the PDPCThe Personal Data Protection Act adds a set of obligations that a compliance management system can track.
- Groups operating across several regulated sectorsMining, energy, health and food businesses face several regulators at once and need one compliance view.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37301 requires a company to prove six things about how it meets its legal and other obligations.
In Tanzania these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37301 explained →

How long does ISO 37301 certification take in Tanzania?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Tanzania these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of regulators and obligations in scope
- State of the compliance obligations register
- Reporting lines and independence of the compliance function
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 37301 certification cost in Tanzania?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Tanzania these factors move both.
- Number of entities and regulated activities
- Obligation mapping and monitoring tools
- Training and reporting channels
- Certification body fees quoted separately
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 37301 consultants and certification bodies in Tanzania
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Tanzania are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37301 in Tanzania (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 (Act No. 11 of 2022), Cap. 44 | The law Section 27 requires reasonable security safeguards, a data protection officer, processor contracts and breach notification to the Commission; it names no ISO standard. |
| Bank of Tanzania Draft Cybersecurity Guidelines for Financial Service Providers, 2026 | Context Draft published for comment in March 2026 under section 71 of the Banking and Financial Institutions Act, 2006. board oversight, a CISO, third-party risk, incident reporting and penetration testing; it names no ISO standard. |
| SADCAS recognition scopes (list dated 31 December 2025) | Context The scopes listed for SADCAS cover ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22000 and product certification; other management system standards are accredited elsewhere. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Tanzania
Choose a certification body accredited for ISO 37301 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 does not show ISO 37301 among SADCAS's management system scopes, so a certificate used in Tanzania may carry accreditation from another economy; check the accreditation body, the scope and your customer's acceptance before you sign. Audit language
Acts are published with a Kiswahili text and an English version, and bodies such as TBS and the PDPC publish in both languages. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Interviews with compliance, legal and business owners and sampling of obligations and controls can be largely remote.
ISO 37301 in Tanzania: questions clients ask
Why consider ISO 37301 in Tanzania?
Because obligations are multiplying. A bank, for example, faces Bank of Tanzania expectations, including the 2026 draft cybersecurity guidelines, alongside Personal Data Protection Act duties. ISO 37301 provides one system to register those obligations, assign owners, monitor them and report to the board. No law found requires the certificate.
Is ISO 37301 within SADCAS's recognised scopes?
No. The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 shows SADCAS's management system scopes as quality, environment, safety and food safety. ISO 37301 certificates used in Tanzania therefore come from bodies accredited elsewhere within the international arrangements. Check the scope on the certificate before relying on it.
Does ISO 37301 certification satisfy regulators?
Not by itself. Regulators judge compliance with their own rules, such as the Personal Data Protection Act or the Bank of Tanzania's guidance once final. A certified system helps you show that obligations are known, owned and monitored, which supports conversations with them. Confirm specific expectations with each regulator.
What is the first step of an ISO 37301 project?
Build the obligations register. List the laws, regulations, licence conditions and commitments that apply, assign each an owner and rate the risk of failing it. The register then drives controls, training, monitoring and reporting, and its completeness largely sets the project timeline.
