In short

ISO 37001 certification in Tanzania at a glance

In Tanzania, ISO 37001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Bribery risk concentrates wherever public money, permits and agents meet, which in Tanzania means public procurement under the Public Procurement Act, 2023, mining and energy licensing, and large infrastructure contracts. ISO 37001 gives an organisation a management system to assess that risk, vet third parties, control payments and gifts, train staff and handle concerns. No law found makes it compulsory, and tenders on NeST set their own evidence. Certification bodies offer the standard, though SADCAS's recognition does not cover it, so check each body's accreditation scope. An accredited certification body certifies; Sterling never does. Sterling's Nairobi office runs the risk assessment and builds controls with your finance, procurement and sales teams, bringing 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 37001 in Tanzania, and what happens without it

In Tanzania the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Contractors and suppliers to public bodiesPublic procurement under the 2023 Act is a high-risk area for bribery, and buyers value demonstrable controls.
  • Mining, energy and infrastructure companiesLicensing, permits and large contracts bring frequent contact with officials and agents.
  • Subsidiaries of multinational groupsGroup anti-bribery programmes often ask local entities to adopt or certify a management system.

Requirements

ISO 37001 requirements in Tanzania

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.

Leadership says no to briberyTop management and the governing body set an anti-bribery policy and show visible, consistent commitment to it.
Someone independent oversees complianceAn anti-bribery compliance function has the authority and independence to oversee the system.
You assessed your bribery risksBribery risks across activities, locations, business partners and transactions are assessed and kept up to date.
People and partners are checkedDue diligence covers relevant staff, business partners and projects, with controls on gifts, hospitality and donations.
Financial and other controls workFinancial and non-financial controls make it hard to pay or receive a bribe without it being noticed.
Concerns can be raised and investigatedStaff can report concerns in confidence without retaliation, and suspected bribery is investigated and acted on.

In Tanzania these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Tanzania?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Tanzania these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Bribery risk assessment across operations and third parties
  • Due diligence on agents, suppliers and joint venture partners
  • Financial and non-financial controls
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Tanzania?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Tanzania these factors move both.

  • Number of entities and high-risk functions
  • Third-party due diligence volume
  • Training and whistleblowing channels
  • Certification body fees quoted separately

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Tanzania

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Tanzania are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37001 in Tanzania (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Public Procurement Act, 2023 (Act No. 10 of 2023), Cap. 410, and PPRAContext
Does not make an ISO certificate a general requirement. public procurement runs through the National e-Procurement System of Tanzania (NeST), and each tender sets its own qualification evidence.
SADCAS recognition scopes (list dated 31 December 2025)Context
The scopes listed for SADCAS cover ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22000 and product certification; other management system standards are accredited elsewhere.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Tanzania

Choose a certification body accredited for ISO 37001 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 does not show ISO 37001 among SADCAS's management system scopes, so a certificate used in Tanzania may carry accreditation from another economy; check the accreditation body, the scope and your customer's acceptance before you sign. Audit language

Acts are published with a Kiswahili text and an English version, and bodies such as TBS and the PDPC publish in both languages. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Interviews with management, finance, procurement and sales, and sampling of transactions, are often mixed on-site and remote.

ISO 37001 in Tanzania: questions clients ask

Does Tanzanian procurement law require ISO 37001?

No. The Public Procurement Act, 2023 sets the procurement framework and PPRA enforces it, but neither makes ISO 37001 a requirement; each tender sets its own evidence. The standard is a voluntary way to show you prevent and detect bribery. Seek legal advice on your anti-corruption duties.

Is ISO 37001 certification available in Tanzania?

Yes. Certification bodies offer ISO 37001 to Tanzanian organisations, often alongside ISO 9001 audits. The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 does not show ISO 37001 among SADCAS's scopes, so check which accreditation covers any body you consider and ask for the certificate showing anti-bribery management in scope.

Where does ISO 37001 focus effort for a Tanzanian contractor?

On the points where money meets discretion. Expect a bribery risk assessment covering tenders, permits, customs and agents, due diligence on third parties, and financial and non-financial controls such as approvals and gifts registers. Training and a trusted reporting channel complete the system.

How does ISO 37001 relate to ISO 37301?

ISO 37001 targets bribery specifically, while ISO 37301 manages compliance obligations of all kinds. Many organisations start with ISO 37001 because bribery is their highest risk, then widen to ISO 37301. The two share structure, so one integrated system can serve both.
