ISO 37001 certification in Switzerland at a glance
One Swiss instrument bears on ISO 37001. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Switzerland keep asking for the certificate?
Swiss law treats corruption as an organisational failure as well as an individual one. Under the Criminal Code, an undertaking is penalised for listed offences, including bribery of private-sector employees, if it failed to take all the reasonable organisational measures required to prevent them, irrespective of the liability of any natural person. The Public Procurement Act adds that contracting authorities take measures against corruption and conflicts of interest. ISO 37001 is not named in either text, but it gives organisations a structured anti-bribery management system that an independent party can audit. Exporters in the mechanical, electrical, metal, medtech and pharma sectors, which Switzerland Global Enterprise treats as focus industries, often work through distributors and agents, which is where due diligence matters most. Certification is voluntary and issued by a certification body, preferably one accredited by the Swiss Accreditation Service. Sterling's Frankfurt office helps Swiss organisations with risk assessment, due diligence design and audit preparation, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 37001 in Switzerland, and what happens without it
In Switzerland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Swiss undertakings in any sectorUnder the Criminal Code an undertaking can be penalised for listed offences, including bribery of private-sector employees, if it failed to take all the reasonable organisational measures required to prevent them.
- Suppliers to federal and cantonal public buyersThe Public Procurement Act has contracting authorities take measures against conflicts of interest, unlawful agreements affecting competition and corruption.
- Exporters in focus industries selling through intermediariesSwitzerland Global Enterprise lists the mechanical, electrical and metal industries among its focus industries; exporters selling through distributors and agents face third-party risk, which the standard's due diligence controls address.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.
In Switzerland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Switzerland?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Switzerland these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of countries, intermediaries and high-risk transactions in scope
- Maturity of due diligence and gifts-and-hospitality controls
- Speak-up channel and investigation procedures
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Switzerland?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Switzerland these factors move both.
- Number of entities and jurisdictions in scope
- Depth of third-party due diligence to build
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Training coverage across management and exposed roles
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Switzerland
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Switzerland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Switzerland
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 37001 hub →
Audit language
German, French, Italian and English are all used in Swiss business; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender, a regulator's correspondence or a customer contract.
Remote and on-site
Policy and records review can be remote at the certification body's discretion; interviews with management and high-risk functions are normally held on-site.
ISO 37001 in Switzerland: questions clients ask
Does ISO 37001 protect a Swiss company from corporate criminal liability?
Not automatically. The Criminal Code attaches liability where an undertaking failed to take all the reasonable organisational measures required to prevent listed offences, including bribery. A certified system may evidence such measures, but a court decides whether they were sufficient. Take legal advice on your specific exposure.
Do Swiss public tenders ask for ISO 37001?
Not as a rule. The Public Procurement Act requires contracting authorities to act against corruption and conflicts of interest, and each tender defines what it asks of suppliers. A tender may value anti-bribery evidence, so read its documents and ask the authority if the wording is unclear.
What does ISO 37001 add beyond a code of conduct in Switzerland?
It turns a code into a managed system: risk assessment, due diligence on third parties, controls on gifts, training, reporting channels and audit. That structure helps show the organisational measures the Criminal Code looks for. It is evidence of the system, not a legal defence, and the certification body assesses it independently.
Who certifies an ISO 37001 system for a Swiss company?
An accredited certification body, not Sterling. Look for accreditation by the Swiss Accreditation Service or another body within the international recognition arrangements, with ISO 37001 in scope. Ask the body for its scope document and sector competence before you apply.
