ISO 37301 certification in South Korea at a glance
Three South Korean instruments bear on ISO 37301. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in South Korea keep asking for the certificate?
A compliance management system turns a long list of Korean obligations into something a board can see. The Act on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials provides a joint corporate penalty, the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act covers public servants, and the Personal Information Protection Act brings penalty surcharges, yet none of them names ISO 37301. The Korea Accreditation Board's published scheme list does not show the standard, so buyers should ask which accreditation backs a certificate. Companies with public-sector customers, personal data, or several regulators are typical applicants. Sterling's Tokyo office prepares the obligations register, compliance risk assessment, controls, complaints handling and evidence, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement. Accredited certification bodies issue the certificate, not Sterling, and legal questions stay with counsel or the regulator.
Who needs ISO 37301 in South Korea, and what happens without it
In South Korea the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Companies subject to the foreign bribery lawArticle 4 of the Act on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials provides a joint corporate penalty.
- Businesses supplying public institutionsThe Improper Solicitation and Graft Act covers public servants, so supplier conduct towards them needs clear rules.
- Companies holding personal dataThe Personal Information Protection Act brings penalty surcharges and supervision duties that a compliance system can track.
- Regulated groups with several statutesFinancial, food, medical device and energy rules each name their own regulator, so one register of obligations helps.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37301 requires a company to prove six things about how it meets its legal and other obligations.
In South Korea these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37301 explained →

How long does ISO 37301 certification take in South Korea?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In South Korea these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of entities, sites and regulated activities in scope
- Obligations register and compliance risk assessment maturity
- Complaints, breach and investigation records
- Certification body scheduling around the Seollal and Chuseok holiday periods
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 37301 certification cost in South Korea?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In South Korea these factors move both.
- Number of entities and regulated activities
- Obligations register and training programme
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO 37001 work
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 37301 consultants and certification bodies in South Korea
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in South Korea are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in South Korea
Use a certification body accredited for ISO 37301 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). The Korea Accreditation Board's published scheme list does not show ISO 37301, so ask the body which accreditation its certificates rest on and check the scope. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 37301 hub →
Audit language
Agree the audit language and the language of the obligations register and policies with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; functions and sites in scope are normally visited.
ISO 37301 in South Korea: questions clients ask
Is ISO 37301 a legal requirement in South Korea?
No law reviewed here names it. The foreign bribery, graft and personal information statutes set duties and penalties, but none cites ISO 37301. A compliance management system helps you track and evidence those duties; it does not replace them. Ask counsel which obligations apply to your business.
Can ISO 37301 help with personal information duties?
Partly, as a way to organise the paperwork: obligations, owners, controls and incident handling can sit in one register. It is not a privacy standard, though, and Article 64-2 of the Personal Information Protection Act provides penalty surcharges. Legal analysis belongs with counsel, and compliance is for the regulator to judge.
Which accreditation backs an ISO 37301 certificate?
ISO 37301 is absent from KAB's published scheme list. That leaves the choice of accreditor to you: question each certification body about the accreditation behind its ISO 37301 certificates, and check what the accreditor's register says. Overseas buyers generally trust a named accreditor within the international arrangements.
How does it differ from ISO 37001?
ISO 37001 is focused on bribery risk, while ISO 37301 covers compliance obligations in general, including those you choose to adopt. Many companies start with anti-bribery controls for exposed relationships and add a wider compliance system later, sharing the risk assessment, training and reporting channels.
