ISO 37001 certification in South Korea at a glance

Two South Korean instruments bear on ISO 37001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in South Korea keep asking for the certificate?

Anti-bribery duties in South Korea sit in two statutes. The Act on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials provides, in Article 4, a joint corporate penalty alongside the individual, and the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act covers public servants within the ACRC's prevention policy. Neither names ISO 37001. The Korea Accreditation Board lists the standard on its scheme list and, from 2026, in its international recognition table, which is designed to help accredited certificates travel with exporters. Contractors, shipbuilders, plant builders and suppliers to multinational buyers are typical applicants. Sterling's Tokyo office prepares the bribery risk assessment, policy, due diligence, agent controls and training evidence, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement. Accredited certification bodies issue the certificate, not Sterling, and a certificate does not decide any legal question; confirm those with counsel.

The need

Who needs ISO 37001 in South Korea, and what happens without it

In South Korea the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Exporters and contractors with public-sector customers abroadThe Act on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials provides a joint corporate penalty in Article 4.
  • Companies dealing with Korean public servantsThe Improper Solicitation and Graft Act covers public servants, and the ACRC presents it within its prevention policy.
  • Suppliers asked for anti-bribery evidence by multinational buyersKAB lists ISO 37001 in its recognition table, so an accredited certificate is designed for acceptance by buyers abroad.
  • Construction, shipbuilding and plant companiesFree Economic Zones such as Busan Jinhae and Gwangyang Bay host heavy industry that works through agents and public tenders.

ISO 37001 requirements in South Korea

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.

Leadership says no to briberyTop management and the governing body set an anti-bribery policy and show visible, consistent commitment to it.
Someone independent oversees complianceAn anti-bribery compliance function has the authority and independence to oversee the system.
You assessed your bribery risksBribery risks across activities, locations, business partners and transactions are assessed and kept up to date.
People and partners are checkedDue diligence covers relevant staff, business partners and projects, with controls on gifts, hospitality and donations.
Financial and other controls workFinancial and non-financial controls make it hard to pay or receive a bribe without it being noticed.
Concerns can be raised and investigatedStaff can report concerns in confidence without retaliation, and suspected bribery is investigated and acted on.

In South Korea these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in South Korea?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In South Korea these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of entities, sites and high-risk relationships in scope
  • Bribery risk assessment and due diligence maturity
  • Agent, intermediary and gift-register records
  • Certification body scheduling around the Seollal and Chuseok holiday periods

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in South Korea?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In South Korea these factors move both.

  • Number of entities, sites and jurisdictions in scope
  • Due diligence and training programme
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Integration with ISO 37301 or ISO 9001 work

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in South Korea

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in South Korea are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in South Korea

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by the Korea Accreditation Board (KAB) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 37001 hub →

    Audit language

Agree the audit language and the language of policies and records with the certification body at application; Korean and English are both used in export-facing companies.

    Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; head office, procurement and agent-facing functions in scope are normally visited.

ISO 37001 in South Korea: questions clients ask

Is ISO 37001 required by Korean law?

No law reviewed here names it. The Foreign Bribery Act provides a joint corporate penalty and the Graft Act covers public servants, but neither cites ISO 37001. A certificate evidences a management system; it does not guarantee any legal outcome. Ask counsel how your controls relate to the statutes that apply to you.

Does a certificate give protection under the foreign bribery law?

Do not assume protection. Article 4 sets a joint corporate penalty, and nothing in that text mentions certification. Controls and records may help show diligence, yet how an investigator or court weighs them is outside Sterling's hands. Take advice from counsel before building a defence strategy around a certificate.

Which accreditation backs an ISO 37001 certificate?

ISO 37001 appears on KAB's scheme list, and its recognition table gained the standard in 2026. A certificate issued before that addition might rest on another accreditation, so request the body's accreditation details, compare them with the accreditor's own directory, and keep the scope statement alongside the certificate.

    Who needs anti-bribery controls most?

Companies that sell to public customers abroad, use agents or intermediaries, or deal with Korean public servants carry the sharpest exposure. Start with a bribery risk assessment by country, customer and relationship, then decide whether certification adds value for your buyers beyond the controls themselves.
