ISO 42001 certification in Poland at a glance

One Polish instrument bears on ISO/IEC 42001. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Poland keep asking for the certificate?

Poland now has a statute that puts a named authority behind the EU AI Regulation. The Act of 3 July 2026 on artificial intelligence systems makes the Komisja Rozwoju i Bezpieczeństwa Sztucznej Inteligencji the market surveillance authority and single point of contact under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, and gives the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA) a part in accrediting conformity assessment bodies for notification. The GDPR continues to apply to personal data in AI systems, supervised by the President of the UODO. ISO/IEC 42001 is named in neither law, and it is not a conformity assessment, but it gives developers, deployers and BPO and software firms the management system they need: an inventory of AI systems, impact and risk assessment, data and model governance, human oversight and supplier control. Certification is issued by a body whose accreditation scope covers the standard. Sterling's Frankfurt office implements the system for Polish clients, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

The need

Who needs ISO 42001 in Poland, and what happens without it

In Poland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Developers and providers of AI systemsThe 2026 Act designates the Commission for the Development and Safety of Artificial Intelligence as market surveillance authority under the EU AI Regulation.
  • Companies deploying AI in HR, credit, customer service or operationsDeployers need governance over data, oversight and suppliers, and personal data used in AI stays under the UODO.
  • Software, cloud and BPO firms offering AI-enabled servicesClients ask how AI use is governed before they sign.
  • Organisations that already hold ISO/IEC 27001 or 27701The AI management system extends the same management cycle.

ISO 42001 requirements in Poland

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.

You know where AI is usedThe AI systems you develop, provide or use are identified, together with the role your organisation plays for each.
Leadership sets the rules for AITop management sets an AI policy and objectives, assigns accountability and provides resources for responsible use.
You assessed AI risks and impactsRisks from AI systems, and their impacts on individuals, groups and society, are assessed before and during use and then treated.
Each AI system is managed through its lifeDesign, data, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement follow defined processes with records you can show.
Data and third parties are under controlThe quality and origin of data, and suppliers of models or components, are managed against your own requirements.
You monitor, audit and improveAI systems and the management system are monitored, audited internally and reviewed by management, with problems corrected.

In Poland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Poland?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Poland these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of AI systems, models and use cases in scope
  • Maturity of data, model and supplier governance
  • Impact assessment and human-oversight arrangements
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Poland?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Poland these factors move both.

  • Number of AI systems and business units in scope
  • Assessment, testing and monitoring effort
  • Training for developers, deployers and managers
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Poland

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Poland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in Poland (3)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Ustawa o systemach sztucznej inteligencji (Dz. U. 2026 poz. 1003)Expected in practice
The Commission for the Development and Safety of Artificial Intelligence is the market surveillance authority and single point of contact under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689; the Act does not name ISO/IEC 42001.
Ustawa o systemach sztucznej inteligencji — accreditation of conformity assessment bodiesRelated
The Act gives the Polish Centre for Accreditation a role in accrediting conformity assessment bodies for notification under the AI Regulation.
Regulation (EU) 2016/679 with the Polish Act of 10 May 2018Related
Personal data used in AI systems remains under the GDPR, supervised by the President of the UODO.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 42001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 42001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Poland

Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 42001 by the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA) or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. ISO/IEC 42001 certification is a management-system certificate and not a conformity assessment under the AI Regulation. Audit language

Audits are held in Polish or English; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender or contract.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 42001 in Poland: questions clients ask

Which authority supervises AI systems in Poland?

The Komisja Rozwoju i Bezpieczeństwa Sztucznej Inteligencji. The Act of 3 July 2026 on artificial intelligence systems makes it the market surveillance authority under Art. 70(1) of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 and the single point of contact under Art. 70(2). Your obligations depend on how your system is classified under the Regulation, so take legal advice on that classification.

Does ISO 42001 certification satisfy the EU AI Regulation in Poland?

No. The Polish Act on artificial intelligence systems does not name ISO/IEC 42001, and an ISO certificate is not a conformity assessment under the AI Regulation. It gives a structured management system for inventory, risk, data and oversight, which supports compliance work. Ask counsel what your classification under the Regulation requires beyond a management system.

What role does PCA play under the Polish AI Act?

A supporting one for notified bodies. The Act gives the Polskie Centrum Akredytacji a role in accrediting conformity assessment bodies that seek notification in the area covered by Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, including a detailed accreditation programme prepared with the minister responsible for digital affairs. That is separate from ISO/IEC 42001 certification of a management system.

Does the GDPR still apply to AI systems in Poland?

Yes. Personal data used to build, train or run an AI system remains subject to the GDPR, which the President of the UODO supervises under the Act of 10 May 2018. The AI Regulation and the Polish AI Act add obligations on top rather than replacing it. Review lawful basis, transparency and impact assessments with your counsel or data protection officer.
