In short

ISO 22000 certification in Oman at a glance

In Oman, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Food safety management in Oman meets ISO 22000 where a processor, caterer or packaging supplier wants an internationally recognised system rather than a bare HACCP plan. Muscat Municipality's training covers food health laws and the inspection of food establishments, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources runs a Food Safety and Quality Center, and the Duqm zone authority reports food and fisheries activity. ISO 22000 combines hazard analysis with leadership, prerequisite programmes, traceability, emergency preparedness, internal audit and management review. A certificate from an accredited certification body can then support customers and export buyers, though no verified rule makes it mandatory. Sterling's Dubai office helps organisations build the system, train food handlers and managers through Sterling Academy and prepare for assessment, with Effivity included with the engagement. Sterling does not certify; the certificate is the certification body's.

The need

Who needs ISO 22000 in Oman, and what happens without it

In Oman the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Fisheries processors in OPAZ zonesThe Duqm zone reports food and fisheries activity serving export customers.
  • Ingredient and food packaging suppliersManufacturers audit upstream suppliers and may ask for a certified system.

Requirements

ISO 22000 requirements in Oman

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.

The basics of hygiene are in placePrerequisite programmes cover premises, cleaning, pest control, personal hygiene, water, maintenance and supplier approval.
You analysed the hazardsBiological, chemical and physical hazards are identified for each product and process step, and the controls needed are decided.
Critical controls are monitoredControl measures are validated, monitored and acted on when limits are breached, following HACCP principles.
Unsafe product does not leaveTraceability, handling of potentially unsafe product, withdrawal and recall are planned and tested.
Food safety information flows along the chainInformation is exchanged with suppliers, customers, authorities and your own staff so hazards are not missed.
Leadership reviews and improvesManagement sets food safety policy and objectives, the system is verified and audited, and it is updated as risks change.

In Oman these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How Sterling gets an Omani company certified

How to get ISO 22000 certified in Oman

One team from the Dubai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients in Oman are served from Sterling's Dubai office (GCC), on site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO 22000 and the Omani requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in Oman?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Oman these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Product categories and process flows in scope
  • Prerequisite programme and traceability records
  • Hazard analysis and validation work
  • Number of sites

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in Oman?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Oman these factors move both.

  • Site size and product range
  • Monitoring and laboratory testing
  • Facility remediation
  • Certification body fees, separate from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Oman

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Oman are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Oman

Certification is issued by an accredited certification body, not by Sterling. Look for accreditation to ISO/IEC 17021-1 with a scope covering the food chain category; the GCC Accreditation Center lists that service and the Oman Accreditation Centre is the national centre. Ask for the accreditation certificate before appointing a body. Edition and transition details: ISO 22000 hub →

Audit language

Agree the audit language with the certification body at application; Arabic and English are both workable, and controlled documents are commonly kept in English for international clients.

Remote and on-site

Stage 1 and stage 2 assessments can combine on-site visits with remote review where the certification body allows it; sites in several governorates add travel.

ISO 22000 in Oman: questions clients ask

How does ISO 22000 differ from HACCP?

HACCP is a hazard analysis method. ISO 22000 wraps it in a management system with leadership, communication, prerequisite programmes, traceability, emergency preparedness, internal audit and management review, and it can be certified. If customers only ask for a HACCP plan, the lighter route may suffice; ask them before choosing.

Can an Omani seafood processor in Duqm certify to ISO 22000?

Yes in principle. Duqm's authority reports food and fisheries activity in the zone, and the standard applies to any organisation in the food chain. Scope the species, processes and sites carefully, and check which customers and export markets need ISO 22000 rather than a retail scheme. The certificate comes from an accredited certification body.

Who issues the ISO 22000 certificate in Oman?

An accredited certification body issues it; Sterling prepares the system but does not certify. Choose a body with ISO/IEC 17021-1 accreditation covering the food-chain category, and verify the scope on its accreditation certificate. The GCC Accreditation Center lists that service, and the Oman Accreditation Centre is the national centre.
