In short

AS9100 certification in the Netherlands at a glance

In the Netherlands, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Precision suppliers in high-tech clusters such as Brainport Eindhoven and Kennispark Twente increasingly look at aviation and defence customers, and those customers expect AS9100, published in Europe as EN 9100. The standard adds aviation, space and defence requirements, including configuration management, product safety, counterfeit part prevention, first article inspection and on-time delivery measurement, to the ISO 9001 framework. Certification follows the IAQG scheme: a certification body approved under that scheme audits the system, and certificates are recorded in the IAQG OASIS database that customers use to check supplier status. Accreditation for work in the Netherlands runs through the Raad voor Accreditatie (RvA) or another accreditation body within the international recognition arrangements. Sterling, with 20+ years in quality management consulting, prepares the quality manual, key-characteristic and risk processes, internal audits and management review, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included in the engagement. Local questions follow.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in the Netherlands, and what happens without it

Requirements

AS9100 requirements in the Netherlands

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In the Netherlands these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against AS9100 and the Dutch requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in the Netherlands?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In the Netherlands these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Number of sites and special processes in scope
      • Maturity of configuration management and first article inspection
      • Customer-specific requirements from primes
      • Time needed to generate evidence of internal audit and management review

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in the Netherlands?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In the Netherlands these factors move both.

      • Number of sites and headcount in scope
      • Special processes and product complexity
      • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
      • Integration with an existing ISO 9001 system

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in the Netherlands

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in the Netherlands are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in the Netherlands (1)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Raad voor Accreditatie (RvA) — national accreditation body for certification bodiesMarket driver
Accredited certification for AS9100/EN 9100 is available through the Dutch national accreditation body or another body within the international recognition arrangements; no mandate.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in the Netherlands

Use a certification body approved under the IAQG scheme and accredited for AS9100/EN 9100 by the Raad voor Accreditatie (RvA) or another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). No body is named here unless its scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: AS9100 hub →

          Audit language

Dutch and English are both used for audits; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender or contract.

          Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

AS9100 in the Netherlands: questions clients ask

Is AS9100 the same as EN 9100?

In practice, yes. EN 9100 is the European designation of the same aerospace quality management system standard, and certificates are issued under the IAQG scheme. If a customer asks for either name, the requirement is the same standard, so confirm the exact wording of the contract with the certification body.

Can an ISO 9001 certified Dutch supplier upgrade to AS9100?

Yes, this is a common route. AS9100 builds on ISO 9001 and adds aerospace requirements, so an existing ISO 9001 system is a starting base rather than something to discard. The certification body audits the added requirements, and it can advise on what your current system still needs.
