In short

ISO 37001 certification in Nepal at a glance

Two Nepali instruments bear on ISO 37001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Nepal keep asking for the certificate?

Public works contracts, hydropower concessions and large investment projects bring Nepali companies into contact with permits, land and government counterparts, which is where bribery risk concentrates. Public procurement under the Public Procurement Act, 2063 sets qualification evidence in each bidding document, and projects under the Public-Private Partnership and Investment Act, 2075 attract lenders and partners who run their own anti-bribery due diligence. ISO 37001 gives a certifiable structure: risk assessment, due diligence on business associates, financial and non-financial controls, training and a channel for raising concerns. None of the instruments cited here makes the standard compulsory. Certification is by a body accredited for anti-bribery management, usually through accreditation in another economy, never by Sterling. Sterling's Mumbai office runs the risk assessment, designs controls and trains staff, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 37001 in Nepal, and what happens without it

In Nepal the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Contractors and suppliers on public worksPublic procurement under the Public Procurement Act, 2063 exposes bidders to bribery risk and scrutiny.
  • Partners in large investment projectsProjects under the Public-Private Partnership and Investment Act, 2075 involve government approvals and lender due diligence.
  • Subsidiaries of international groupsGroup policies often require an anti-bribery management system across all operations.

Requirements

ISO 37001 requirements in Nepal

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.

Leadership says no to briberyTop management and the governing body set an anti-bribery policy and show visible, consistent commitment to it.
Someone independent oversees complianceAn anti-bribery compliance function has the authority and independence to oversee the system.
You assessed your bribery risksBribery risks across activities, locations, business partners and transactions are assessed and kept up to date.
People and partners are checkedDue diligence covers relevant staff, business partners and projects, with controls on gifts, hospitality and donations.
Financial and other controls workFinancial and non-financial controls make it hard to pay or receive a bribe without it being noticed.
Concerns can be raised and investigatedStaff can report concerns in confidence without retaliation, and suspected bribery is investigated and acted on.

In Nepal these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Nepal?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nepal these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of entities, projects and business associates in scope
  • Existing compliance policies and controls
  • Due diligence on high-risk roles and partners
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Nepal?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nepal these factors move both.

  • Scope of operations and associates
  • Due diligence and screening tools
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Training across sites and languages

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Nepal

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nepal are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37001 in Nepal (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Public Procurement Act, 2063, Public Procurement Rules and standard bidding documents (Public Procurement Monitoring Office)Does not name the standard
Each bidding document sets qualification evidence; integrity commitments are tender-specific.
Public-Private Partnership and Investment Act, 2075 (Office of the Investment Board)Does not name the standard
Frames investment projects in which lenders and partners carry out anti-bribery due diligence.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nepal

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. NBSM, the national standards body, describes no national accreditation body for certification bodies, so certificates used in Nepal usually carry accreditation from an accreditation body in another economy; ask for the accreditation certificate and scope. Audit language

Most Nepali laws and official notices are issued in Nepali, and the Nepal Law Commission publishes English translations of many Acts, including the Privacy Act. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Stage audits are held at operating sites; document review and some interviews can be remote at the certification body's discretion.

ISO 37001 in Nepal: questions clients ask

Is ISO 37001 required for public contracts in Nepal?

Not under the procurement framework cited here. The Public Procurement Act, 2063 and the standard bidding documents leave qualification evidence to each tender, and none of those instruments names ISO 37001. A certificate can still strengthen a bidder's integrity case. Ask the procuring entity and your counsel what integrity declarations apply.

Why do investment project partners ask for ISO 37001?

Because they carry their own anti-bribery exposure. Large projects under the Public-Private Partnership and Investment Act, 2075 involve permits, land and government counterparts, and international lenders and partners run due diligence on everyone in the chain. A certified anti-bribery management system gives them documented controls to rely on.

What does an ISO 37001 system include?

A bribery risk assessment, an anti-bribery policy and compliance function, due diligence on business associates and staff in exposed roles, financial and non-financial controls, gifts and hospitality rules, training, and a raising-concerns channel with investigation procedures. Certification auditors test that these operate, not just that they exist.

Who certifies ISO 37001 in Nepal?

Anti-bribery certificates in Nepal usually come from bodies accredited abroad. Before engaging one, confirm that anti-bribery management is named on its accreditation, ask how its auditors test due diligence and financial controls, and check that it has no conflicts with your public-sector counterparts or project partners.
