ISO 20000-1 certification in Nepal at a glance
Two Nepali instruments bear on ISO/IEC 20000-1. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Nepal keep asking for the certificate?
Banks and payment institutions in Nepal now ask their technology suppliers harder questions. Nepal Rastra Bank's Cyber Resilience Guidelines 2023 expect licensed institutions to confirm that third-party vendors and ICT suppliers meet their resilience requirements, using assessments such as certification or external audit. For a managed service provider, data centre operator or software house, ISO/IEC 20000-1 shows that incidents, changes, capacity and service levels are run under control, and it sits naturally beside ISO 27001. Government IT tenders under the Public Procurement Act, 2063 decide their own evidence, so read each bidding document. Certification is by a body accredited for IT service management, usually through accreditation in another economy, never by Sterling. Sterling's Mumbai office designs service processes, sets measures and runs internal audits, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 20000-1 in Nepal, and what happens without it
In Nepal the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- IT service providers to banks and payment institutionsNRB's Cyber Resilience Guidelines 2023 expect licensed institutions to confirm that ICT suppliers meet their resilience requirements.
- Software houses and managed service providers serving overseas clientsExport clients often ask for evidence of controlled service management.
- Bidders for government IT contractsEach bidding document sets its own qualification evidence.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 20000-1 requires a company to prove six things about how it plans and delivers IT services.
In Nepal these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 20000-1 explained →

How long does ISO 20000-1 certification take in Nepal?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nepal these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of services and customers in scope
- Maturity of incident, change and problem processes
- Tooling and service reporting
- Integration with an ISO 27001 system
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 20000-1 certification cost in Nepal?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nepal these factors move both.
- Services, sites and staff in scope
- Service management tooling
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Supplier and subcontractor management
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 20000-1 consultants and certification bodies in Nepal
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 20000-1 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nepal are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 20000-1 in Nepal (2)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Cyber Resilience Guidelines 2023 (Nepal Rastra Bank) | Expected in practice Institutions should obtain confirmation that third-party vendors and ICT suppliers meet their cyber resilience requirements, for example through a certification or external audit; ISO/IEC 20000-1 is not named. |
| Public Procurement Act, 2063, Public Procurement Rules and standard bidding documents (Public Procurement Monitoring Office) | Expected in practice Each bidding document decides whether a service management certificate is requested. |
"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 20000-1 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 20000-1 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nepal
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. NBSM, the national standards body, describes no national accreditation body for certification bodies, so certificates used in Nepal usually carry accreditation from an accreditation body in another economy; ask for the accreditation certificate and scope. Audit language
Most Nepali laws and official notices are issued in Nepali, and the Nepal Law Commission publishes English translations of many Acts, including the Privacy Act. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Stage audits combine on-site visits with remote review of records and service tooling, at the certification body's discretion.
ISO 20000-1 in Nepal: questions clients ask
Does NRB require ISO/IEC 20000-1 from IT suppliers?
Not by name. The Cyber Resilience Guidelines 2023 ask licensed institutions to confirm that third-party vendors and ICT suppliers meet their resilience requirements, and suggest assessments such as certification or external audit. ISO/IEC 20000-1 is one way a supplier can answer, especially alongside ISO 27001. Check what your banking client's contract asks for.
Why would a Nepali software firm choose ISO/IEC 20000-1?
To prove that services are run in a controlled way, not only built well. The standard covers service level management, incident and problem handling, change and release control, capacity and supplier management. Outsourcing clients abroad often ask for exactly that evidence during vendor selection.
How does ISO/IEC 20000-1 fit with ISO 27001?
They complement each other. ISO 27001 manages information security risk, while ISO/IEC 20000-1 manages the delivery of IT services. Many providers integrate both into one management system with shared document control, internal audit and management review, which reduces the effort of keeping two certificates.
Who certifies ISO/IEC 20000-1 in Nepal?
Look for a body whose accreditation explicitly lists IT service management. Nepali providers typically work with a body accredited abroad under the international arrangements. Many choose the same body that audits their ISO 27001 system, which allows combined or back-to-back audits and lowers travel and preparation effort.
