AS9100 certification in Nepal at a glance

Two Nepali instruments bear on AS9100. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Nepal keep asking for the certificate?

Few Nepali manufacturers work in aerospace supply chains today, but a precision workshop that receives its first enquiry will find AS9100 in the supplier approval pack. No Nepali instrument cited here requires the standard; export-oriented zones such as Bhairahawa and Simara are set up under the Special Economic Zone Act, 2073 without naming any quality scheme. The requirement comes from the customer, who also decides which certification bodies it accepts, so confirm that before planning. An established ISO 9001 system is the practical starting point, with configuration management, first-article inspection and counterfeit-part prevention added on top. Certification is by an accredited certification body approved for the scheme, never by Sterling. Sterling's Mumbai office helps manufacturers close gaps against AS9100, build configuration, traceability and product safety controls, and prepare for the audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in Nepal, and what happens without it

In Nepal the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Precision engineering and machining workshopsFirms seeking subcontract work in aerospace supply chains meet AS9100 in supplier approval packs.
  • Maintenance and component suppliers linked to aviationCustomers in the aerospace chain set their own supplier quality conditions.
  • Manufacturers already certified to ISO 9001An existing quality system is the base on which AS9100 requirements are added.

AS9100 requirements in Nepal

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In Nepal these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How Sterling gets a Nepali company certified

How to get AS9100 certified in Nepal

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Nepal are served from Sterling's Mumbai office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against AS9100 and the Nepali requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in Nepal?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nepal these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Scope: products, processes and special processes
      • Maturity of an existing ISO 9001 system
      • Customer flow-down requirements
      • Availability of sector-qualified auditors

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in Nepal?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nepal these factors move both.

      • Headcount and number of sites
      • Number of products, processes and subcontractors
      • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
      • First article inspection, traceability and counterfeit-part controls

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Nepal

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nepal are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Nepal (2)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Public Procurement Act, 2063, Public Procurement Rules and standard bidding documents (Public Procurement Monitoring Office)Does not name the standard
Bidding documents set their own qualification evidence.
Special Economic Zone Act, 2073 and Special Economic Zone Regulation, 2074 (Special Economic Zone Authority)Does not name the standard
Sets the framework for export-oriented zones such as Bhairahawa and Simara; aerospace customers set their own supplier requirements.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nepal

AS9100 is a sector scheme, and the aerospace customer decides which certification bodies it accepts. The certificate comes from a body accredited and approved for it within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Ask for its accreditation and scheme approvals in writing and confirm with your customer before you apply. Edition and transition details: AS9100 hub →

          Audit language

Most Nepali laws and official notices are issued in Nepali, and the Nepal Law Commission publishes English translations of many Acts, including the Privacy Act. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Audits are on-site at the shop floor and inspection areas; document review can be remote at the certification body's discretion.

AS9100 in Nepal: questions clients ask

Is AS9100 required by Nepali law?

None of the instruments cited here requires it. Procurement rules leave evidence to each bidding document, and the Special Economic Zone Act, 2073 names no quality scheme. The requirement, where it exists, comes from an aerospace customer's supplier approval conditions, so ask that customer in writing which certificate and which certification bodies it expects before you plan.

Who issues AS9100 certificates for Nepali suppliers?

A certification body approved for the aerospace scheme and accredited for it within the international recognition arrangements. Your aerospace customer decides which bodies it accepts, so check with them first and ask any body for its scheme approval in writing.

Should a Nepali workshop get ISO 9001 before AS9100?

Usually yes. ISO 9001 builds the controlled documents, internal audit and corrective action that AS9100 extends with configuration management, product safety and counterfeit-part prevention. Having the base system certified first also gives your aerospace customer early evidence of discipline while the sector requirements are added.

What does AS9100 add on the shop floor?

Tighter control of product. Expect first article inspection, traceability of materials and parts, control of special processes, protection against counterfeit parts, and risk management on every delivery. These controls cost time and tooling, so scope the certificate to the products your aerospace customer actually buys from you.
