ISO 42001 certification in Italy at a glance
In Italy, ISO/IEC 42001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Artificial intelligence now has named regulators in Italy. Art. 20 of Law 132 of 23 September 2025 designates AgID and the Agenzia per la cybersicurezza nazionale as the national AI authorities, with AgID as notifying authority and ACN as market surveillance authority under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, while the Banca d'Italia, CONSOB and IVASS keep the surveillance role for financial uses and the Garante's powers stay unaffected. The article does not mention ISO/IEC 42001, so certification is voluntary evidence of governance rather than a legal route. Certificates come from certification bodies accredited by Accredia; Sterling does not certify. Sterling's Frankfurt office helps Italian developers, deployers and financial firms inventory AI systems, assess risk and document controls through Effivity, with Sterling Academy training included in the engagement.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Italy, and what happens without it
In Italy the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Developers and deployers of AI systems in ItalyLaw 132/2025 designates the national AI authorities, AgID and ACN.
- Banks, insurers and other financial users of AIThe Banca d'Italia, CONSOB and IVASS keep the market surveillance role for financial uses.
- Providers selling AI-enabled services to public bodiesAgID defines procedures for notification, evaluation, accreditation and monitoring of bodies verifying AI conformity.
- Organisations preparing for EU AI Act dutiesA management system gives structure to governance, risk and documentation.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Italy these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Italy?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Italy these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Inventory of AI systems and their roles and risk levels
- Existing information security and privacy systems
- Data governance and model lifecycle records
- Certification-body availability around the August holiday period
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Italy?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Italy these factors move both.
- Number of AI systems and use cases in scope
- Third-party model and vendor dependencies
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Italy
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Italy are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Italy
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by Accredia or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. ISO/IEC 42001 is a voluntary management-system standard; whether it helps with duties under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 is a question for counsel and the authorities. Audit language
Audits are held in Italian or English; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 42001 in Italy: questions clients ask
Which Italian authorities oversee artificial intelligence?
AgID and ACN. Art. 20 of Law 132/2025 designates them as the national artificial intelligence authorities, with AgID as notifying authority and ACN as market surveillance authority under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689. The Banca d'Italia, CONSOB and IVASS keep the surveillance role for financial uses. Ask counsel which authority applies to your system.
Is ISO 42001 required by Italian law?
No. Art. 20 of Law 132/2025 is about designating authorities and does not mention ISO/IEC 42001, which is a voluntary management-system standard. Certification by an accredited body can show that governance and risk processes are in place, but whether it helps with duties under the EU Regulation is for counsel and the authorities.
What does AgID do for conformity assessment bodies?
Art. 20 of Law 132/2025 makes AgID responsible for defining procedures and exercising functions on notification, evaluation, accreditation and monitoring of the bodies that verify the conformity of artificial intelligence systems, as national and EU law provide. If you rely on such a body, check its status with AgID.
Does the Garante still matter for AI projects in Italy?
Yes. Law 132/2025 states that the competences, tasks and powers of the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali remain unaffected, so a project that processes personal data stays within the Garante's reach alongside the AI authorities. Build the privacy and AI governance work together and confirm the split with counsel.
