In short

ISO 27701 certification in Italy at a glance

In Italy, ISO/IEC 27701 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Privacy certification in Italy has more than one route, and they are easy to confuse. The Garante per la protezione dei dati personali supervises the GDPR, and its certification page explains that GDPR certification mechanisms are accredited by the supervisory authority or the national accreditation body, with the Garante's additional requirements applying to ISO/IEC 17065 accreditation. ISDP 10003 is a voluntary scheme accredited by Accredia for conformity with the GDPR. ISO/IEC 27701 is different again: a management-system certification that gives a structured privacy programme, useful as a benchmark rather than as a GDPR certificate. Certificates come from certification bodies accredited by Accredia; Sterling does not certify. Sterling's Frankfurt office builds the system for Italian processors and controllers, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 27701 in Italy, and what happens without it

In Italy the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Controllers and processors wanting an external benchmarkThe GDPR route in Italy has voluntary certification options; a management-system certificate is another.
  • Cloud and SaaS processors serving Italian customersCustomers ask processors to evidence privacy controls beyond contract wording.
  • Groups with employee and customer data in several entitiesA privacy management system gives one structure across entities.
  • Organisations that already hold ISO/IEC 27001The privacy system can be built on the security system.

Requirements

ISO 27701 requirements in Italy

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.

You know whose data you hold and whyYou know what personal data you process, for which purposes and on what basis, and whether you act as controller, processor or both.
Privacy has an ownerManagement assigns responsibility for privacy and sets objectives, so everyone who handles personal data knows their role.
You assessed the privacy risksRisks to the people whose data you process are assessed and treated, including when new products and processes are designed.
People can exercise their rightsRequests to access, correct or delete data, and other individual rights, run through a defined and timely process.
Sharing and suppliers are controlledDisclosures, transfers and processors are governed by agreements and checks, so data is used only as agreed.
You can demonstrate itRecords of processing, notices and decisions are kept, and the privacy system is audited and reviewed like any management system.

In Italy these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How Sterling gets an Italian company certified

How to get ISO 27701 certified in Italy

One team from the Frankfurt office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Italy are served from Sterling's Frankfurt office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 27701 and the Italian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Italy?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Italy these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of processing activities and systems in scope
  • Existing ISO/IEC 27001 system and records of processing
  • Processor and international-transfer arrangements
  • Certification-body availability around the August holiday period

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Italy?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Italy these factors move both.

  • Number of entities and processing activities
  • Security remediation needed
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Italy

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Italy are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

The Garante is Italy's supervisory authority; compliance is evidenced through records, notices, contracts and security measures.

GDPR certification mechanisms are accredited by the supervisory authority or the national accreditation body, with the supervisory authority's additional requirements applying to ISO/IEC 17065 accreditation.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Italy

Management-system certification, not a GDPR certificate: ISO/IEC 27701 is certified by a body accredited by Accredia or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). GDPR certification mechanisms follow the separate route described by the Garante. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27701 hub →

    Audit language

Audits are held in Italian or English; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 27701 in Italy: questions clients ask

Is ISO 27701 a GDPR certificate in Italy?

Not in the sense the Garante describes. GDPR certification mechanisms are accredited by the supervisory authority or Accredia under ISO/IEC 17065, with the Garante's additional requirements. ISO/IEC 27701 is a management-system certification, so treat it as a benchmark and not as proof of GDPR compliance. Confirm with counsel or the Garante what weight it carries.

What is ISDP 10003, and how does it differ from ISO 27701?

ISDP 10003 is a voluntary, proprietary scheme, accredited by Accredia, for determining conformity with the GDPR; product-certification bodies accredited under ISO/IEC 17065 issue it. ISO/IEC 27701 is a separate management-system standard certified through a different accreditation route. An organisation may choose either or both, depending on what its clients accept.

Which authority supervises privacy compliance in Italy?

The Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, an independent administrative authority, is the supervisory authority responsible for monitoring application of the GDPR in Italy. It applies the Regulation and the Codice in materia di protezione dei dati personali. A privacy management system helps you evidence your practices, but the Garante's own assessment is what counts in an inquiry.

Who certifies ISO 27701 in Italy?

The certificate comes from a body accredited for management-system certification, in Italy usually by Accredia. Sterling builds the privacy management system but is not a certification body. Before you book an audit, ask the body to confirm in writing that this standard falls inside its accredited scope, and settle the audit language when you apply.
