ISO 42001 certification in India at a glance
Two Indian instruments bear on ISO/IEC 42001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in India keep asking for the certificate?
MeitY's India AI Governance Guidelines, unveiled on 5 November 2025 under the IndiaAI Mission, set out seven guiding principles, recommendations across six pillars of AI governance and practical guidelines for industry, with the government's stated preference to rely on existing legislation wherever possible. They do not cite ISO/IEC 42001 and create no certificate. For companies building or deploying AI, the practical question is how to show that principle-level guidance is carried into practice; ISO/IEC 42001 answers it with an AI management system covering AI policy, roles, risk and impact assessment, data governance, life-cycle controls and monitoring. Where AI systems use personal data, DPDP duties apply alongside. NABCB's published recognition does not list ISO/IEC 42001, so check that the certification body's accreditation scope covers it explicitly. Sterling's Navi Mumbai office builds the AI inventory, assessments and controls with product and data teams, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. The local route and questions follow.
Who needs ISO 42001 in India, and what happens without it
In India the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Developers and deployers of AI systemsMeitY's India AI Governance Guidelines set principles and practical guidance for industry.
- AI-enabled services processing personal dataDPDP duties apply to the personal data AI systems use.
- IT services exporters building AI for overseas clientsClients ask for evidence of AI governance.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In India these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does ISO 42001 certification take in India?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In India these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Inventory of AI systems and their roles (developer, provider, user)
- AI risk and impact assessments
- Data governance for training and inference data
- Certification body scheduling around festival holidays
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in India?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In India these factors move both.
- Number of AI systems and products in scope
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Model documentation and monitoring tooling
- Integration with ISO 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in India
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in India are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in India (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| India AI Governance Guidelines (MeitY, IndiaAI Mission, 5 November 2025) | Expected in practice Seven guiding principles, six pillars and practical guidelines; ISO/IEC 42001 not cited. |
| Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and Rules, 2025 | Expected in practice Duties for personal data used by AI systems; no standard cited. |
| NABCB international recognition | Accreditation ISO/IEC 42001 is not listed among NABCB's recognised scopes on its pages; confirm the certification body's accreditation covers it. |
"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 42001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 42001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in India
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by NABCB or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Confirm the body's accreditation explicitly covers ISO/IEC 42001. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →
Audit language
English audits are the norm; agree interviews in Hindi or the state language, any interpreter and the document language with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 42001 in India: questions clients ask
Does India require ISO/IEC 42001?
No. The India AI Governance Guidelines, unveiled by MeitY on 5 November 2025, set seven guiding principles and recommendations but cite no standard. ISO/IEC 42001 is a voluntary way to organise AI governance, and any legal duties come from existing law, so confirm with your counsel.
Which accreditation should the certification body hold?
NABCB's pages do not list ISO/IEC 42001 among its recognised scopes. Ask any certification body to show that its accreditation explicitly covers the standard, and treat that proof as a condition of appointing it rather than an assumption. A certificate from a body without that scope may not carry the weight you expect with customers.
How does ISO/IEC 42001 relate to the DPDP Act?
The DPDP Act still governs personal data used by AI systems, while ISO/IEC 42001 governs the AI management system itself. One does not replace the other. An AI team handling personal data will need both its data protection duties and its management controls in order.
