In short

ISO 14001 certification in Denmark at a glance

In Denmark, ISO 14001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Environmental management in Denmark has a direct legal anchor in at least one place: Executive Order No. 1138 of 18 September 2025 recognises accredited certification to ISO 50001, ISO 14001 or an equivalent standard as the way companies above its energy-use test satisfy the duty to run a certified energy management system, with EMAS available to some. Beyond that, demand comes from offshore wind and energy-sector buyers around Port Esbjerg, the food cluster and manufacturers answering sustainability questionnaires. DANAK, the national accreditation body, has also announced that ISO 14001:2026 was published in April 2026 and set a transition for accredited bodies, so timing matters. Certificates come from accredited certification bodies, never from Sterling. Sterling's Enschede office prepares the system, legal register and internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 14001 in Denmark, and what happens without it

In Denmark the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Large energy users covered by the energy management orderThe executive order accepts certification to ISO 14001 among the accredited options, and EMAS or an equivalent can be used by some companies.
  • Offshore wind and energy-sector suppliersLarge buyers around Port Esbjerg and the cleantech sector set environmental criteria for suppliers.
  • Food and ingredient producersEnvironmental performance is part of customer audits in the Danish food cluster.
  • Manufacturers and chemical producersThey fall under SAMSIK's NIS 2 supervision and carry environmental permits and customer scrutiny.
  • Suppliers answering sustainability questionnairesCustomers ask for independently certified environmental management.

Requirements

ISO 14001 requirements in Denmark

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 14001 requires a company to prove six things about how its activities affect the environment.

You know your environmental impactsYou have identified how your activities, products and services interact with the environment and which of those impacts are significant.
You know the rules that applyEnvironmental laws, permits and other commitments that apply to you are identified, and you check regularly that you meet them.
Leadership commits to protecting the environmentTop management sets an environmental policy that commits to preventing pollution and meeting obligations, with objectives to deliver it.
Significant impacts are under controlOperations linked to significant impacts are planned and controlled, taking a life-cycle view of what you buy, make and deliver.
You are ready for an incidentPotential environmental emergencies such as spills or releases are identified, and the response is planned and tested where practicable.
You track performance and improveEnvironmental performance is monitored, compliance is evaluated, and the system is audited and reviewed by management to improve.

In Denmark these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 14001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 14001 certification take in Denmark?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Denmark these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of sites and the significance of environmental aspects
  • Legal-register maturity
  • Transition planning for the 2026 edition
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 14001 certification cost in Denmark?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Denmark these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and processes in scope
  • Environmental data and monitoring gaps
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
  • Integration with energy or safety systems

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 14001 consultants and certification bodies in Denmark

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 14001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Denmark are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Denmark

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by DANAK, Denmark's national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. DANAK states that a new edition of ISO 14001 was published in April 2026 and that a transition period has been decided; its AMC 49 describes how existing accreditations move to it. Ask your certification body for its transition plan. Edition and transition details: ISO 14001 hub →

Audit language

Danish is the official language and English is widely used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

Remote and on-site

Audits are on-site at the main operating locations, with some document review remote at the body's discretion.

ISO 14001 in Denmark: questions clients ask

Does Danish law refer to ISO 14001?

Yes, in one place. Executive Order No. 1138 of 18 September 2025 defines certification for energy management as accredited certification to ISO 50001, ISO 14001 or an equivalent standard by a body accredited by DANAK or an equivalent accreditation body. It applies to companies above the order's energy-use test, so check it with Energistyrelsen or your counsel.

Is there a transition to the 2026 edition of ISO 14001?

Yes. DANAK says a new edition of ISO 14001 was published in April 2026 and a transition period has been decided. Its rule AMC 49 describes how existing accreditations move to the new edition, which determines how certification bodies and, in turn, certified clients schedule their own transitions. Ask your certification body for its plan.

Can EMAS be used instead of ISO 14001?

In the energy management order, yes for some companies: it allows an environmental management system certified under EMAS, or an equivalent standard, in place of an energy management system where the system includes a qualifying energy review. EMAS is a separate EU scheme. Documentation goes to Energistyrelsen, so confirm the exact conditions with it.

Who certifies an ISO 14001 system in Denmark?

An accredited certification body, never Sterling. DANAK publishes accreditation rules for environmental and energy management certification and EA lists it as an MLA signatory with a management system scope. Verify the scope covers your activities before applying. Sterling prepares the environmental management system, legal register and internal audit.
