In short

ISO 50001 certification in Denmark at a glance

In Denmark, ISO 50001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

For some Danish companies, ISO 50001 is not optional. Executive Order No. 1138 of 18 September 2025 requires obligated large energy users to maintain a certified energy management system that includes an energy review, and it defines certification as accredited certification to ISO 50001, ISO 14001 or an equivalent standard by a body accredited by DANAK or an equivalent accreditation body. Others may use energy audits, EMAS or an energy performance contract, and documentation goes to Energistyrelsen. DANAK has updated its own rule AMC 17 to reflect the order. Sterling issues no certificate. Sterling's Enschede office checks whether the order reaches you, builds the energy review, baseline and monitoring, and prepares the internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 50001 in Denmark, and what happens without it

In Denmark the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Large energy users covered by the energy management orderThe order requires a certified energy management system in obligated companies, with certification to ISO 50001, ISO 14001 or an equivalent standard by an accredited body.
  • Companies close to the order's thresholdCompanies whose consumption falls under the test after permitted deductions can choose an energy audit instead.
  • Manufacturers and food processors with high process energyEnergy cost and customer carbon requests make a managed system attractive.
  • Cleantech and energy-sector firmsTheir buyers and partners ask for demonstrable energy management.
  • Operators of ports and heavy logisticsPort Esbjerg lists onshore power supply and electricity among its focus areas.

ISO 50001 requirements in Denmark

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 50001 requires a company to prove six things about how it manages and improves energy performance.

You know where the energy goesAn energy review shows how energy is used and consumed and identifies the areas of significant energy use.
Baselines and indicators are setEnergy performance is measured against a baseline using indicators that suit your operations.
Leadership commits to improvementTop management sets an energy policy, objectives and targets, and appoints a team with authority to act.
Significant uses are controlledOperation, maintenance and design affecting significant energy uses follow defined criteria, and energy is considered in purchasing.
Data is collected and checkedEnergy data is planned, measured and analysed so that improvement can be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Performance actually improvesAction plans are delivered, results are evaluated, and the system is audited and reviewed so energy performance keeps improving.

In Denmark these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 50001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 50001 certification take in Denmark?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Denmark these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Whether the company is within the order's scope
  • Quality of energy metering and baseline data
  • Number of sites and energy carriers
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 50001 certification cost in Denmark?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Denmark these factors move both.

  • Sites and energy carriers in scope
  • Metering and monitoring investment
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
  • Energy review depth

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 50001 consultants and certification bodies in Denmark

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 50001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Denmark are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Denmark

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by DANAK, Denmark's national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO 50001 hub →

    Audit language

Danish is the official language and English is widely used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

    Remote and on-site

Audits are on-site at the main energy-using sites; metering data review can be partly remote.

ISO 50001 in Denmark: questions clients ask

Is a certified energy management system mandatory in Denmark?

For some companies, yes. Executive Order No. 1138 of 18 September 2025 requires obligated companies to run a certified energy management system that includes an energy review, where certification means accredited certification to ISO 50001, ISO 14001 or an equivalent standard. Others may use an energy audit. Whether your company falls within the order is for Energistyrelsen or your counsel.

Who may certify the system for the order?

A certification body accredited under ISO/IEC 17021-1 for the relevant standard by DANAK, or by an equivalent national accreditation body that has passed peer evaluation for management system certification. The order spells this out. Choose a body that can show that scope, and keep its certificate for any filing.

Can EMAS or a performance contract replace the system?

In certain cases. The order lets companies with an EMAS-certified or equivalent environmental management system that includes a qualifying energy review, or with an energy performance contract meeting its annexes, be exempted, with documentation going to Energistyrelsen. The agency may demand more information, so confirm the route before relying on it.

What has DANAK done about the order?

DANAK lists a November 2025 edition of its rule AMC 17 on accreditation for certification of energy and environmental management systems that brings in Executive Order No. 1138/2025. That tells certification bodies how the order interacts with their accreditation. Ask your chosen body how it applies the rule to your certification.
