In short

ISO 45001 certification in Denmark at a glance

In Denmark, ISO 45001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Denmark gives ISO 45001 a visible legal hook: under Executive Order No. 688 of 16 June 2025, in force from 1 July 2025, Arbejdstilsynet publishes on its website information about companies with an international ISO 45001 certificate, provided it comes from a certification body accredited for ISO 45001 by DANAK or an equivalent accreditation body. The same order repealed the earlier scheme of recognised working environment certificates. That makes the choice of an accredited certification body more than a formality, and it matters to employers in manufacturing, food, logistics and offshore wind contracting. Sterling does not issue the certificate. Sterling's Enschede office builds the occupational health and safety system, legal register, hazard controls and worker consultation, and prepares internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 45001 in Denmark, and what happens without it

In Denmark the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Employers wanting a certificate shown on Arbejdstilsynet's websiteExecutive Order No. 688 lets Arbejdstilsynet publish information about companies with an ISO 45001 certificate from an accredited body.
  • Contractors in offshore wind and energyLarge energy buyers expect contractors to show safety management systems.
  • Manufacturers and chemical producersIndustrial sites carry higher accident risk and customer scrutiny.
  • Food processors and logistics operatorsHandling, machinery and transport hazards make a systematic approach useful.
  • Companies that held a recognised working environment certificateThe earlier recognised-certificate order was repealed from 1 July 2025.

Requirements

ISO 45001 requirements in Denmark

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 45001 requires a company to prove six things about keeping its people safe and healthy at work.

Leadership takes responsibility for safetyTop management is accountable for preventing work-related injury and ill health, and sets a policy and objectives to do so.
Workers have a real sayWorkers and their representatives are consulted and take part in decisions on hazards, controls, incidents and the system itself.
You know the hazards and the risksHazards are identified on an ongoing basis, risks are assessed, and health and safety legal requirements are known and met.
Controls follow the right orderRisks are reduced using the hierarchy of controls, from eliminating the hazard down to protective equipment, including for contractors.
You are prepared for emergenciesEmergency situations are identified, response plans are in place, people are trained and drills are carried out.
Incidents lead to learningIncidents and nonconformities are investigated, causes are corrected, and performance is monitored, audited and reviewed.

In Denmark these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 45001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 45001 certification take in Denmark?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Denmark these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of sites, workers and high-risk activities
  • Legal register and incident records
  • Contractor and temporary worker controls
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 45001 certification cost in Denmark?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Denmark these factors move both.

  • Sites and workforce in scope
  • Hazard control remediation
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
  • Worker consultation and training

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 45001 consultants and certification bodies in Denmark

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 45001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Denmark are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

ISO 45001 in Denmark: questions clients ask

Does Arbejdstilsynet publish ISO 45001 certificates?

It publishes information about companies with an international ISO 45001 certificate on its website under Executive Order No. 688 of 16 June 2025, in force from 1 July 2025. The certificate must come from a body accredited for ISO 45001 by DANAK or an equivalent accreditation body, and that body must send a copy. Check conditions with Arbejdstilsynet.

What happened to the earlier recognised working environment certificate?

Executive Order No. 688 repeals Executive Order No. 92 of 26 January 2024 on supervision of and publication of information about companies with a recognised working environment certificate, from 1 July 2025. The replacement concerns ISO 45001 certificates specifically. If you held the earlier certificate, ask your certification body and Arbejdstilsynet how it affects you.

Can a certificate be removed from Arbejdstilsynet's list?

Yes. The order says the information is taken off if the certification body tells Arbejdstilsynet that the certificate has been withdrawn, suspended or lapsed, and reappears if the body confirms it is valid again. That keeps the public list tied to the certificate's status. Maintaining surveillance audits is therefore essential.

Which accreditation must an ISO 45001 certifier hold?

For publication under the order, accreditation for certification of ISO 45001 management systems under ISO/IEC 17021-1, from DANAK or a body meeting the order's tests on national accreditation bodies. DANAK has an AMC 05 on this certification. Verify the body's scope before applying. Sterling prepares the system, and the body certifies.
