FSSC 22000 certification in Denmark at a glance
In Denmark, FSSC 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
For a Danish food manufacturer, the legal floor is already set: Fødevarestyrelsen expects an egenkontrolprogram built on the seven HACCP principles with a written risk analysis, and it does not ask for a certificate. FSSC 22000 is what retailers and multinational customers ask for on top, adding a certified management system, prerequisite programmes and scheme requirements. Wholesale and industrial food businesses should also remember that Fødevarestyrelsen is their NIS 2 sector authority. The certificate comes from a scheme-authorised certification body accredited by DANAK or an equivalent body, never from Sterling. Sterling's Enschede office reuses your existing self-check documentation, closes gaps against the scheme and runs an internal audit before the certification audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs FSSC 22000 in Denmark, and what happens without it
In Denmark the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food manufacturers and ingredient producers supplying retailersRetail and multinational customers ask for a benchmarked food-safety scheme certificate.
- Producers already running a HACCP-based self-check programmeFødevarestyrelsen requires the programme, and FSSC 22000 adds a certified management system on top.
- Wholesale and industrial food processorsFødevarestyrelsen is also their NIS 2 sector authority, so security and food safety are both audited.
- Packaging and food-contact material makersCustomers ask for food-safety certification along the chain.
- Exporters of Danish food productsImporting customers set scheme requirements.

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.
In Denmark these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Denmark?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Denmark these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of production sites and food chain categories
- Maturity of prerequisite programmes
- Food defence and food fraud assessments
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Denmark?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Denmark these factors move both.
- Number of sites and lines
- Gaps in hazard analysis and prerequisite programmes
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
- Scheme additional requirements
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Denmark
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Denmark are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Denmark
Use a certification body that is authorised under the scheme owner's rules for FSSC 22000 and accredited by DANAK or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Confirm both the scheme authorisation and the accreditation scope before you apply. Edition and transition details: FSSC 22000 hub →
Audit language
Danish is the official language and English is widely used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are on-site because production areas and hygiene controls must be observed; document review can be remote.
FSSC 22000 in Denmark: questions clients ask
Does Denmark require FSSC 22000 certification?
No. Fødevarestyrelsen requires a written self-check programme based on HACCP principles, and its guidance does not ask for a third-party certificate. FSSC 22000 is a private scheme, adopted when retailers or multinational customers ask for it. Confirm what your customers require, and your obligations as a food business with Fødevarestyrelsen.
Can our existing self-check programme be reused?
Largely. The legally required egenkontrolprogram already rests on the seven HACCP principles, a risk analysis and documented procedures. An FSSC 22000 system adds management-system elements, prerequisite programmes and scheme requirements around it. Expect to extend and formalise what exists rather than start again, then test it through an internal audit.
Who audits against FSSC 22000 in Denmark?
A certification body authorised under the scheme owner's rules and accredited for management system certification, ideally by DANAK. EA lists DANAK as an MLA signatory for that scope. Check the body's authorisation and food chain categories before you apply. Sterling prepares the system and the evidence but does not certify.
Does food NIS 2 supervision affect FSSC 22000 plans?
Only if the business is covered. SAMSIK's list names Fødevarestyrelsen as NIS 2 sector authority for wholesale distribution and industrial production of food, subject to the law's size and sector tests. Food safety certification and cybersecurity duties are separate. Treat them as parallel workstreams that share an inspector.
