ISO 13485 certification in Czechia at a glance
Act No. 375/2022 Coll. on medical devices and in vitro diagnostic medical devices, with Regulations (EU) 2017/745 and 2017/746, supervised by SÚKL is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Czechia ask for evidence that you meet it.
For medical device makers in Czechia, ISO 13485 sits beside regulation rather than inside it. SÚKL supervises manufacturers, importers, distributors and service providers under Act No. 375/2022 Coll. and Regulations (EU) 2017/745 and 2017/746, and its pages do not name the standard. Even so, notified bodies and customers expect a quality management system, and ČIA, the national accreditation body, lists ISO 13485 certification among its recognised management system scopes. CzechInvest describes Czechia as a place for life-science manufacturing and contract R&D, so component suppliers, contract manufacturers and software developers also meet buyer qualification. Certificates come from accredited certification bodies, never from Sterling, and CE marking is a separate conformity assessment. Sterling's Frankfurt office builds design controls, risk management links and supplier controls, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.
Who needs ISO 13485 in Czechia, and what happens without it
In Czechia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Medical device manufacturers selling in Czechia and the EUSÚKL supervises manufacturers under the national Act and the EU regulations, and a quality system underpins technical documentation.
- Contract manufacturers and component suppliersDevice makers qualify suppliers against ISO 13485 expectations.
- Importers, distributors and service providersSÚKL's market surveillance covers them, so documented procedures help in inspections.
- Software and digital health developersSoftware that qualifies as a device meets the same regulatory framework.
- Life-science R&D and manufacturing firmsCzechInvest describes Czechia as a location for life-science manufacturing and contract R&D.

Take the ISO 13485 readiness checkISO 13485 requirements in Czechia
Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 13485 requires a company to prove six things about making medical devices that are safe and work as intended.
In Czechia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 13485 explained →

How long does ISO 13485 certification take in Czechia?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Czechia these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Classification of devices and regulatory strategy
- Maturity of design controls and risk management
- Supplier controls and sterilisation or validation work
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 13485 certification cost in Czechia?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Czechia these factors move both.
- Number of sites and device families
- Design control, validation and documentation remediation
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
- Notified body fees, quoted separately
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 13485 consultants and certification bodies in Czechia
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 13485 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Czechia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Czechia
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by ČIA, the Czech national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. For CE marking under the EU device regulations, conformity assessment by a notified body is a separate step. Edition and transition details: ISO 13485 hub →
Audit language
Czech is the official language and English is commonly used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are on-site because production, cleanroom and storage areas must be seen; document review can be partly remote.
ISO 13485 in Czechia: questions clients ask
Does Czech law require ISO 13485?
Neither the Act nor SÚKL's pages name it. SÚKL supervises devices under Act No. 375/2022 Coll. and Regulations (EU) 2017/745 and 2017/746, and its pages do not mention ISO 13485. In practice buyers and notified bodies expect a quality management system, so the certificate is a usual way to evidence one. Ask SÚKL or counsel about duties.
What does SÚKL supervise in the device sector?
Its market surveillance page names manufacturers, importers, distributors, service providers and healthcare providers using devices, and says the aim is that devices on the Czech market are safe and functional. It also handles registration for Czech manufacturers and importers. Your quality records are part of what inspectors may ask to see.
Who accredits ISO 13485 certification bodies in Czechia?
ČIA. Its own page lists medical device management system certification to ISO 13485 among the scopes recognised within the international arrangements. A notified body for CE marking is a different category with its own designation, so do not assume an ISO 13485 certificate substitutes for conformity assessment under the regulations.
Does an ISO 13485 certificate give CE marking?
No. SÚKL's pages describe CE marking as the result of a conformity assessment, with higher risk classes using a notified body. ISO 13485 certification evidences the quality management system, which is an input to that work. Which route applies depends on the device class, so confirm with your regulatory advisers.
