In short

ISO 22301 certification in Bangladesh at a glance

Bangladesh Bank Guideline on ICT Security, Version 4.0 (2023) refers to ISO 22301, yet none of the Bangladeshi instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in Bangladesh ask for it anyway.

Flood, fire, power failure and supplier disruption are ordinary risks for Bangladeshi exporters, and a missed shipment to an overseas buyer is costly. ISO 22301 turns a continuity plan into an audited system: critical activities, recovery objectives, plans and exercises. Bangladesh Bank's ICT security guideline, version 4.0, lists business continuity management among the areas in which banks and financial institutions should obtain industry-standard certification, and the Cyber Security Act, 2026 adds provisions for critical information infrastructure. BPO and IT firms often meet continuity clauses in client contracts. Certification is issued by an accredited certification body against a defined scope, which may be one site or a single critical process. Sterling's Mumbai office helps clients run business impact analyses, design plans and exercises and prepare for audit, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 22301 in Bangladesh, and what happens without it

In Bangladesh the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Banks, non-bank financial institutions and payment providersBangladesh Bank's guideline lists business continuity management among the areas for industry-standard certification.
  • Operators of critical information infrastructureThe Cyber Security Act, 2026 has a chapter on critical information infrastructure and its security monitoring and audit.
  • BPO and IT service firms with client continuity clausesClients write recovery expectations into outsourcing contracts and audit them.
  • Manufacturers and exporters facing flood, fire and supply disruptionA tested plan protects delivery commitments to overseas buyers.

Requirements

ISO 22301 requirements in Bangladesh

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22301 requires a company to prove six things about how it keeps operating when something goes wrong.

You know what must keep runningA business impact analysis identifies your priority activities and how quickly each one must be resumed after disruption.
Leadership owns continuityTop management sets continuity policy and objectives, assigns roles and backs the programme with people and budget.
You assessed what could disrupt youRisks of disruption to priority activities, and to the resources they depend on, are assessed and treated.
Plans are written and readyResponse and recovery plans, and a defined incident response structure, exist for the scenarios that matter most to you.
You have tested themPlans are exercised, and lessons from exercises and real incidents are fed back into them.
You keep the programme currentContinuity performance is evaluated, internal audits and management reviews take place, and the programme improves over time.

In Bangladesh these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22301 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 22301 certification take in Bangladesh?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Bangladesh these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Identification of critical activities and recovery objectives
  • Number of sites, systems and suppliers in the business impact analysis
  • Evidence of exercises and tests
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 22301 certification cost in Bangladesh?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Bangladesh these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and critical activities in scope
  • Recovery capability such as alternate sites, backup and failover
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Exercise design and facilitation

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 22301 consultants and certification bodies in Bangladesh

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Bangladesh are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Bangladesh

Choose a certification body whose accreditation covers this standard and your sector: accreditation by the Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Ask for the accreditation certificate and read its scope. Edition and transition details: ISO 22301 hub →

    Audit language

Buyer standards, export documents and most management system records are in English, and Bangla is the state language under the Constitution; interviews with workers and supervisors are normally in Bangla. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Audits combine remote document reviews with on-site visits to operations and recovery arrangements; exercises can be observed on site or remotely.

ISO 22301 in Bangladesh: questions clients ask

Does Bangladesh Bank expect business continuity certification?

Its ICT security guideline, version 4.0 of 2023, tells institutions to obtain industry-standard certification in at least a few areas, and business continuity management is one of the examples. The clause names no standard. Banks and financial institutions should confirm with their supervisors whether ISO 22301 meets it.

Is critical information infrastructure covered by continuity rules?

The Cyber Security Act, 2026 has a chapter on critical information infrastructure, including security monitoring, inspection and audit, but it cites no standard and sets no certificate. Whether your systems count as such infrastructure is for the Government to decide. Ask counsel or the National Cyber Security Agency.

What do auditors expect to see for continuity exercises?

Evidence that critical activities and recovery objectives were identified, plans were exercised or tested, and the results led to improvements. Plan an exercise before the audit and keep the records. Ask the certification body what mix of exercise types it accepts for your size and sector.

Can small manufacturers use ISO 22301?

Yes. Scope can be a single site or a critical process, such as order fulfilment for an overseas buyer, so the project can match a smaller organisation's capacity. Choose the activities whose interruption would hurt customers most, and let that decide the scope. Confirm the scope wording with the certification body.
