ISO 17025 accreditation in Bangladesh at a glance
Safe Food Act, 2013 (Act No. 43 of 2013) refers to ISO/IEC 17025, yet none of the Bangladeshi instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in Bangladesh ask for it anyway.
A test report is worth what the laboratory behind it can prove. In Bangladesh, textile, leather, food, water and pharmaceutical laboratories supply the reports that buyers, auditors and regulators rely on, and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 is how a laboratory proves technical competence. The Bangladesh Accreditation Board is the national accreditation body, listed among ILAC signatory bodies, while the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution tests, calibrates and approves laboratories under its 2018 Act; the two are not the same thing. The Safe Food Act, 2013 also refers to accreditation of food laboratories. Accreditation is granted by the accreditation body, never by Sterling. Sterling's Mumbai office helps laboratories document methods, uncertainty, traceability and quality controls and prepare for assessment, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 17025 in Bangladesh, and what happens without it
In Bangladesh the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Testing laboratories serving textile, leather and garment exportersBuyers expect test reports from laboratories whose competence has been assessed by an accreditation body.
- Food, agro and water testing laboratoriesThe Safe Food Act refers to accreditation policy for food laboratories.
- Pharmaceutical quality-control and calibration laboratoriesManufacturers and regulators depend on reliable analytical and calibration results.
- Calibration providers and in-house laboratoriesBSTI tests, calibrates and approves laboratories under its Act, and accredited calibration supports customer audits.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.
In Bangladesh these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Bangladesh?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Bangladesh these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of methods, matrices and ranges in the scope
- Measurement uncertainty, traceability and proficiency testing evidence
- Validation and verification of methods
- Assessor availability for the technical fields
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Bangladesh?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Bangladesh these factors move both.
- Number of disciplines and methods
- Calibration of reference equipment and proficiency testing
- Accreditation body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Environmental control and equipment upgrades
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Bangladesh
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Bangladesh are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Bangladesh
Accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 is granted by the national accreditation body, here the Bangladesh Accreditation Board, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Sterling does not accredit. Check the accreditation scope against the tests or calibrations you offer, and ask your customers which accreditation they accept. Audit language
Buyer standards, export documents and most management system records are in English, and Bangla is the state language under the Constitution; interviews with workers and supervisors are normally in Bangla. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Assessments are on-site: assessors witness tests, review equipment, environment and records, and observe technical staff at work.
ISO 17025 in Bangladesh: questions clients ask
Who accredits laboratories in Bangladesh?
The Bangladesh Accreditation Board is the national accreditation body and appears among ILAC's signatory bodies. ILAC's news item of 2020 says its status was extended to medical testing and inspection. Check the board's current scope for the tests or calibrations you offer, and ask your customers which accreditation they recognise.
Is BSTI approval the same as ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation?
No. Under its 2018 Act BSTI approves laboratories and operates testing and calibration services, while accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 is an assessment of technical competence by an accreditation body. A laboratory may hold one or both. Ask the customer or regulator which is needed for the report you issue.
Do food laboratories need accreditation in Bangladesh?
The Safe Food Act, 2013 includes, among the Authority's functions, supporting policy on accreditation of food laboratories, which signals the direction without setting a scope. Confirm with the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority what applies to official testing and to your reports, and ask buyers which accredited methods they require.
What evidence do assessors expect on measurement uncertainty?
Assessors look for uncertainty budgets for each method in scope, traceable calibrations and proficiency testing or interlaboratory comparison results. Prepare them before the application, because they usually take longest. Include the methods, ranges and matrices you want accredited, and ask the accreditation body how it assesses each technical field.
