What it is

What is Lexcel accreditation?

Lexcel is a practice management accreditation owned by the Law Society of England and Wales and listed among its firm accreditations. It gives a legal practice an external assessment of how the firm is managed, rather than of the legal quality of any single piece of advice.

The Law Society runs two versions. Lexcel England and Wales is for practices in that jurisdiction; Lexcel International is for legal practices elsewhere. A practice applies to the Law Society and is assessed against the version that fits it. Lexcel is not an ISO standard, and it is not issued by a certification body, although firms already running ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 27001 will recognise the management-system logic behind it.

Current versions. The Law Society's application pages refer to Lexcel England and Wales v6.1 and Lexcel International v5.1. Confirm the version in force with the Law Society when you apply.

Who it is for

Who needs Lexcel?

Law firms usually come to Lexcel from one of four starting points:

  • Clients and panels want evidence of good management. Corporate clients, referrers and panel reviews look for an external mark when they choose a firm.
  • The firm is growing. More fee earners, offices or practice areas make informal ways of working hard to keep consistent.
  • Partners want one framework for risk. Client matters, supervision, information and complaints handled the same way across the firm.
  • You practise outside England and Wales. Lexcel International offers legal practices elsewhere the same kind of assessment.

Accreditation reflects how the firm operates on the day of assessment and after it; the value comes from the practices, not the logo.

Requirements

What does Lexcel require?

The Law Society publishes the Lexcel standard for each version. Its section structure is not summarised here, so the list below describes what a Sterling Lexcel programme covers rather than the standard's own headings; every requirement is checked against the applicable version during the gap assessment.

  • Gap assessment: your current practice compared with the applicable Lexcel version, keeping what already works
  • Practice management policies: written around how your firm is actually run, short enough to be used
  • Risk and client matters: how risks in the practice and in client work are identified, recorded and supervised
  • Information and confidentiality: arrangements that protect client information in daily work
  • Training: partners, fee earners and support staff trained on the policies that apply to them
  • Internal review: files and processes reviewed, with findings closed before the assessment

What does useful Lexcel evidence look like?

Policies partners have approved and staff can find, supervision and file review records, a risk register that is used, training records for every person, complaint handling that led to changes, and review findings closed with proof. Held in Effivity, the evidence is ready when the assessor asks.

How Sterling implements ISO and GRC standards

Effivity · ISO and GRC software, included in every engagement

How Effivity helps you fulfil, automate and simplify the requirements of Lexcel.

Every Sterling Lexcel engagement includes Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Your consultant configures the workspace within the agreed scope, so policies, risk registers, file reviews, complaints, training records and management review live in one place, the system runs in daily work and the assessor reviews a live system rather than a binder. Sterling consulting clients get their Effivity subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

Effivity: Context of the Organisation dashboard with issues, interested parties and scope
Effivity · Context of the Organisation dashboard
Context

Scope and interested parties

The scope, the internal and external issues and the interested parties are kept in one register and reviewed on a schedule, so they stay current as the business changes instead of being rewritten before each assessment.

Leadership

Policies, roles and objectives

Policies, responsibilities and objectives with their measures, owners and dates live where the people who own them work; progress is reported from the system, not from a separate spreadsheet.

Planning

Risks and opportunities

A risk register with owners, actions and review dates; treatments tracked to closure and brought to management review automatically.

Support

Competence, awareness and documented information

Training and competence records for every person, linked to Sterling Academy; documents with versions, approvals and distribution, so the current version is the only one in use.

Operation

Client matters, supervision and file review

Matter risk checks, supervision records and file reviews captured as the work is done, with actions tracked to closure.

Performance evaluation

Monitoring, internal audit and management review

Audit programmes, findings and follow-up; KPIs on live dashboards; a management review that records its inputs, decisions and actions.

Improvement

Nonconformity, complaints and corrective action

Raised, investigated and closed with root cause and the evidence that the action worked; recurring issues visible to management before they become a finding.

Across the system

Your own processes, forms and reports

Forms, fields, workflows and reports adapted to how you work, without code; legal and customer requirements tracked to the processes they affect.

What this means at the Lexcel assessment

The assessor asks for policies, supervision records, file reviews, the risk register and training records. In Effivity each of those is a screen, with dates, owners and evidence attached, not a folder somebody assembles the week before. After accreditation, Sustain™ runs in the same workspace.

In your engagement

  • Subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost
  • Configured by your Sterling consultant within the agreed scope
  • Your documents, records and registers migrated, not retyped
  • Admin and user training for your team
  • Modules for QMS, EMS, OHSMS, ISMS and more when you integrate other standards

Sterling Academy · Lexcel e-learning

Train every person in the firm, not just the practice manager.

Sterling Academy delivers e-learning for the whole workforce and for the people who run the system: video lessons with practice checkpoints, a final exam and a numbered Certificate of Completion for each learner, verifiable online. Sterling consulting clients benefit from preferential course access and special pricing through their Sterling consultant, including complimentary awareness training for their people as part of the engagement.

  • Awareness for every employee on the firm's policies and why they matter
  • Courses for partners, supervisors and the practice manager
  • Internal review skills for the people who will check files and processes, as applicable
  • Learner progress by team and a training status report for the assessor
  • New joiners trained as they arrive, so evidence stays current
  • A Sterling consultant reachable when a learner needs one

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Lexcel

Who grants Lexcel accreditation?

The Law Society. Lexcel is one of its firm accreditations: the practice applies to the Law Society and is assessed against the applicable version. Sterling prepares firms for that assessment and does not accredit anyone.

Can a law firm outside England and Wales get Lexcel?

Yes. The Law Society offers Lexcel International, currently version 5.1, for legal practices outside England and Wales. The application route and assessment arrangements are confirmed with the Law Society.

Is Lexcel the same as ISO 9001 certification?

No. Lexcel is a Law Society accreditation for legal practices; ISO 9001 is an international quality standard certified by accredited certification bodies. A firm can run both in one management system, with shared policies, reviews and records.
