ISO 44001 client experienceWhat it is
What is ISO 44001 and what is it used for?
ISO 44001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for a collaborative business relationship management system. Organisations use it to identify, develop and manage the relationships in which they depend on others to deliver, from joint ventures, alliances and consortia to business customers and supply chains. It applies to public and private organisations of every size, and a partner, in the standard's own definition, can be another organisation or an internal group within your own.
The heart of the standard is clause 8, a life cycle of eight stages that takes a relationship from the first decision to collaborate to a managed ending: operational awareness, knowledge, internal assessment, partner selection, working together, value creation, staying together and exit strategy activation. Each relationship is governed through a relationship management plan (RMP), which sets out how it is managed and controlled. The organisation keeps a corporate RMP as documented information; once a partner is selected, the parties start a joint RMP and maintain it for as long as they work together.
The standard can be applied to a single project, programme or acquisition, to one relationship, to several identified relationships such as a multi-partner alliance or a supply chain, or across the whole organisation. It grew out of British Standard BS 11000-1:2010, which the Institute for Collaborative Working developed with BSI; ISO published ISO 44001 in March 2017 and it replaced BS 11000. ISO/TC 286 maintains a family around it: twelve principles in ISO/TR 44000, implementation guidelines in ISO 44002, guidance for smaller enterprises (ISO 44003) and the large organisations working with them (ISO 44004), and newer guidance such as ISO/TS 44005 on leadership (June 2026); the same committee holds ISO 37500, guidance on outsourcing. Only ISO 44001 contains requirements a certification body audits.
Current edition. ISO 44001:2017 is the first edition, published in March 2017. Amendment 1:2024, "Climate action changes" (February 2024), requires the organisation to decide whether climate change is a relevant issue for its context and notes that stakeholders may have climate-related requirements. A second edition is being prepared by ISO/TC 286: the draft, ISO/DIS 44001, was registered in September 2025 and its ballot closed on 28 January 2026; ISO lists no publication date. Until then, certification is to ISO 44001:2017 with its amendment, and any arrangements for existing certificates will follow publication; confirm them with your certification body. ISO 44001 revision: what is known so far
Who it is for
Who needs ISO 44001 certification?
ISO 44001 fits any organisation whose results depend on how well it works with others: joint-venture partners, alliance members, key suppliers, business customers or another division of the same group. It is of particular interest to organisations that commission or deliver major projects in sectors such as rail, construction, defence and utilities, and the Institute for Collaborative Working's executive members come from aviation, construction, defence, IT and transport. Organisations usually reach us from one of four positions:
- A client, framework or tender names ISO 44001. Find out what will be accepted before you commit: the whole organisation or only the relationship with that client, an accredited certificate or any certificate. The answer shapes scope, certification body and timetable.
- An important partnership is costing more than it returns. Joint objectives slip, disputes recur, and the relationship runs on formal letters rather than conversation. The standard puts governance, measurement and an agreed route for resolving issues around it.
- You are about to form a joint venture, alliance or consortium. Selection criteria, joint objectives and an exit strategy are far easier to agree before signing than a year into delivery.
- You rely on many partners and manage each one differently. A few relationships get senior attention and the rest drift. Prioritising by value and risk brings order without treating every supplier as a strategic partner.
ISO 44001 does not replace the contract. It governs how the parties plan, decide, behave and part company around it, and the certificate covers the scope you define.
Business benefits
What ISO 44001 changes in the way you work with partners
Many partnerships are negotiated with care and then managed by habit. The standard replaces habit with an agreed way of choosing partners, sharing risk, measuring value and resolving problems.
- Partners chosen on evidenceSelection criteria set before the search, candidates evaluated against them, and joint objectives tested before commitment, not assumed after it.
- Value that can be shownA value proposition with measurable benefits, improvement targets and results analysed jointly, so both sides can see what the collaboration delivers.
- Risk managed jointlyA joint risk management process that reaches into the supply chain and the extended enterprise, so each party sees the exposures the other is carrying.
- Disagreements with a routeA joint issue resolution process agreed at the outset, so problems reach the right level early instead of hardening into claims.
- Relationships that outlast individualsCompetence and behaviour developed and recorded, knowledge managed jointly and the RMP kept current, so new people do not reset the partnership.
- Endings that protect the businessA joint exit strategy agreed early and maintained, continuity planned for disengagement, and every exit evaluated for lessons and future opportunities.
Track a handful of indicators: joint objectives delivered on time, the age of open issues, the trend in agreed behaviour and trust indicators, and value realised against the business case. Longer meeting minutes prove nothing.
Requirements
What are the main ISO 44001 requirements?
ISO 44001 is built on the common clause structure of ISO management system standards, clauses 4 to 10, as it stood in 2017, so much of it can be shared with ISO 9001 or ISO 45001. What sets it apart is clause 8, where operation becomes an eight-stage life cycle applied to specific relationships. The standard numbers these Stage 1 to Stage 8; they are not the certification body's Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits. The table maps the clause and subclause titles in plain language; your system is checked against the full text during the programme.
| Clause | What it requires of you | What it looks like in practice |
|---|---|---|
| 4 Context of the organisation | Determine relevant issues and stakeholders, assess where collaboration can bring benefits, set the scope and consider the creation of value; since Amendment 1:2024, determine whether climate change is a relevant issue | A context analysis, stakeholder requirements, a scope naming the relationships covered, and the value collaboration should bring |
| 5 Leadership | Show leadership and commitment, set a policy, establish an organisational governance structure and appoint a senior executive responsible (SER) for collaborative programmes | A policy approved at the top, a governance chart showing who authorises and oversees each relationship, and an SER with a mandate |
| 6 Planning | Address risks and opportunities, set collaborative business relationship objectives and plans, and identify and prioritise relationships and opportunities for collaboration | A risk register, objectives with owners and dates, and a relationship register ranked by value and risk |
| 7 Support | Provide resources; ensure competence and behaviour, awareness and communication; control documented information, including a record of collaborative competencies and the corporate RMP | Competence profiles for relationship roles, training records, a communication plan and a controlled corporate RMP |
| 8.2 Operational awareness (Stage 1) | Set out the SER's duties, validate the operational governance structure, identify operational objectives and value, set up value analysis, prioritise relationships, develop competence and behaviour, assess initial risk and establish the RMP | A charter per relationship with objectives, expected value, a first risk assessment and the RMP |
| 8.3 Knowledge (Stage 2) | Develop the strategy and business case, identify key individuals' competence and behaviour, manage knowledge, assess supply chain and extended enterprise risks and opportunities, implement risk management and feed what is learned into the RMP | An approved business case, a knowledge log, key-person profiles and a risk register that looks beyond the direct partner |
| 8.4 Internal assessment (Stage 3) | Assess your capability and environment for collaboration, strengths, weaknesses and collaborative profile; appoint collaborative leadership; define partner selection criteria; implement the RMP | A candid self-assessment, a collaborative leader and selection criteria written before partners are approached |
| 8.5 Partner selection (Stage 4) | Nominate and evaluate potential partners, plan engagement and negotiation, engage initially, assess joint objectives and a joint exit strategy, select preferred partners and initiate the joint RMP | Candidate evaluations, an engagement plan, agreed joint objectives and a first draft of the joint RMP |
| 8.6 Working together (Stage 5) | Establish joint governance, knowledge and risk management, review operational processes and systems, measure performance, improve collaborative competence, set up joint issue resolution, a joint exit strategy and the contracting arrangements, then implement the joint RMP | A joint management team with terms of reference, a shared risk register, an issue log with escalation, and the joint RMP and exit strategy signed with the agreement |
| 8.7 Value creation (Stage 6) | Establish a value creation process, identify improvements and set targets, use learning from experience and update the joint RMP | A joint improvement register with targets and owners, and value reported against the business case |
| 8.8 Staying together (Stage 7) | Maintain SER oversight, manage the joint relationship, monitor behaviour and trust indicators, keep creating value, deliver and analyse joint objectives, resolve issues, and maintain the exit strategy and joint RMP | SER reviews from both sides, a periodic trust survey and results analysed together |
| 8.9 Exit strategy activation (Stage 8) | Initiate disengagement, protect business continuity, evaluate the relationship, consider future opportunities, and review and update the RMPs | An exit plan triggered by agreed conditions, continuity for customers and staff, and lessons fed back into the RMPs |
| 9 Performance evaluation | Monitor, measure, analyse and evaluate performance, including exit evaluation; audit internally; hold management reviews | Relationship KPIs, exit evaluations, audits sampling relationships at different stages, and a management review that takes decisions |
| 10 Improvement | Act on nonconformities with corrective action and improve the system continually | Corrective actions closed with evidence, and lessons from each relationship and exit improving the next |
What does useful ISO 44001 evidence look like?
The policy and the SER's appointment; the governance structure; a prioritised relationship register; for each relationship in scope, its objectives, value analysis, business case, risk assessment and RMP; partner evaluations; the joint RMP, governance records, issue log and exit strategy agreed with the partner; behaviour and trust monitoring; internal audits and a management review that decided something. The informative annexes, from the assessment checklist (Annex A) to the relationship maturity matrix (Annex D), are useful starting points. Much of this exists in contract files and meeting notes; we organise it, fill the gaps and hold it in Effivity.
ISO 44001 requirements explained, clause by clause and stage by stageCertification process
How do you get ISO 44001 certified?
Certification comes after the system has been used on real relationships, never before. Sterling consults and prepares with you; an independent certification body audits and decides, and that independence is why clients and partners give the certificate weight.
- 01Choose the level and scope of the certificate.Decide whether the system covers one project, one relationship, a group of relationships or the whole organisation, and confirm sites, headcount and what the client requires.
- 02Gap analysis: compare current partnering practice with ISO 44001.The gap analysis reviews governance, partner selection, contracts, risk sharing, issue handling and exits against clauses 4 to 10 and the eight stages, retains what already works and turns the gaps into actions with owners and dates.
- 03Take live relationships through the life cycle.Set the policy, governance and SER, build the corporate RMP, train the people involved and move relationships through the stages until joint RMPs and joint governance are running.
- 04Check the system before the auditor does.Internal audit samples relationships at different stages and management review examines their performance; we raise findings first and see each closed with evidence.
- 05Go through the certification body's assessment.A Stage 1 readiness review of your documented system and preparedness, then a Stage 2 audit of the system at work; you answer any findings and the certification body decides.
- 06Keep the relationships under management.Joint reviews, trust monitoring, audits and improvement continue, alongside surveillance at least once a year and recertification every three years.
Before comparing quotations, find out who will issue the certificate and check with the accreditation body that ISO 44001 is in that certification body's accredited scope. Accreditation for this standard exists in some countries, including the United Kingdom, and not others, so ask whoever wants the certificate which kind they accept. Cost
How much does ISO 44001 certification cost?
ISO 44001 prices vary widely because scope varies so much: one joint venture differs from a programme covering forty key suppliers, and a contractor with mature alliance practice needs less than a firm formalising partnering for the first time. The constant is the proposal: every component shown, with the fee fixed.
| Cost component | What affects it |
|---|---|
| Consulting and implementation | The level of application, the relationships in scope, the maturity of your partnering practice and the share of the work your own team takes (Design™ or Drive™) |
| Independent certification | Audit days the certification body sets for your scope and sites, travel, annual surveillance, and whether your client requires ISO 44001 accreditation |
| Internal resources | Time from the SER, relationship managers and partner-facing teams, training, and agreeing joint arrangements with partners |
| Software and learning | Effivity and Sterling Academy access come with the engagement at no additional cost; the proposal states users, courses and how long access runs |
| Continued support | Internal audits, joint reviews, refresher learning, new relationships in scope and the move to the revised edition, under Sustain™ and Revise™ |
What moves the price
- The number of relationships, partners and programmes in scope
- Scope: one relationship or the whole organisation
- How much partnering practice exists today, formal or informal
- Sites and countries, and the languages your partners work in
- The client's or tender's deadline, and how much your team can take on
What a Sterling proposal always shows
- Who delivers what, the assumptions we have made and what is excluded
- Certification-body charges kept apart from ours, for fair comparison
- Effivity, training and Academy access shown line by line, at no additional cost
- Payment stages tied to finished deliverables
- An all-inclusive proposal that does not move
Timeline
How long does ISO 44001 certification take?
Allow four to nine months. Where you land depends on how many relationships are in scope and how far through the life cycle they are: an established alliance can show joint governance and a joint RMP quickly, while a new programme needs time to select partners and start working together, so the auditor sees more than plans. Certification bodies set their own entry conditions; one accredited body asks for the system to have been fully operational for at least three months, with a management review and a full cycle of internal audits. The plan works back from that evidence, and its milestones sit in Effivity.
| Phase | What determines the pace |
|---|---|
| Scope and gap analysis | Access to the SER, relationship owners, contracts and current partner reviews |
| Build and implementation | How quickly leadership agrees policy and governance, the number of relationships, and partners' availability for joint arrangements |
| Evidence and review | Relationships moving far enough through the stages to leave records, joint reviews held, then internal audit and management review |
| Certification assessment | A suitable certification body, accredited for ISO 44001 where required; Stage 1 and Stage 2 dates; time to close findings |
Share any award date or framework deadline on the first call; we will say what is realistic and which decisions, including those needing your partners, cannot wait. Distrust a guaranteed certificate date offered before anyone asks who your partners are.
Challenges
Common ISO 44001 implementation challenges
Five obstacles account for most ISO 44001 programmes that lose momentum, and each can be dealt with.
Collaboration lives in the contract, not in behaviour.
A contract sets obligations; it does not make people share information or raise problems early. The standard treats competence and behaviour as requirements, so define the behaviours each relationship role needs, train for them and monitor agreed trust indicators.
Partners were chosen on price and are expected to act as partners.
Write selection criteria that test collaborative capability as well as cost, and assess your own collaborative profile first, so selection rests on evidence both sides have seen.
Only one side is running the system.
From partner selection onward the standard needs joint arrangements: a joint RMP, joint governance, and joint risk and issue processes. Bring the partner in early and agree what each side contributes and where joint records are kept.
Nobody plans the exit until the relationship is failing.
A joint exit strategy is assessed at partner selection, established while working together and maintained throughout. Agreeing the rules for a controlled disengagement while relations are good protects customers, staff and both businesses.
There are too many relationships to manage them all this way.
The standard requires you to identify and prioritise relationships. Apply the full life cycle to the few that carry the most value and risk, keep the certificate's scope to those, and bring others in as capability grows.
Your engagement
What your ISO 44001 engagement includes
Everything needed to run the system and prepare your people sits inside one agreed scope. Partnering advice is often sold as a workshop or a contract template; a Sterling engagement runs from the first governance decision to the issued certificate, from one team for a single all-inclusive proposal.
Scope, gap analysis and implementation plan
The level of application, the relationships and partners in scope, and a plan that fixes dates, responsibilities and who decides what.
Process development and documentation
Policy, governance, corporate RMP, selection criteria, joint RMP and exit strategy, drafted from Sterling's own template sets together with their future users.
Effivity ISO & GRC software
Relationship registers, RMPs, risks, audits and reviews held in Effivity from day one, included with the engagement at no additional cost.
Training for everyone
Internal auditor training for the people chosen to audit the system, as applicable to your standard, plus preferential Sterling Academy access, including complimentary awareness training for your people as part of the engagement.
Internal audit and management review
Carried out or facilitated as agreed, sampling relationships at different stages, with every finding closed on evidence ahead of the certification audit.
Certification readiness and support
Readiness for the Stage 1 review and Stage 2 audit, help choosing a certification body whose accreditation your client accepts, and support through to the issued certificate.
Certification decisions remain with the independent certification body.
How we deliver
How Sterling supports your ISO 44001 implementation
Sterling OS™, the operating system for all our delivery, governs every ISO 44001 engagement. Its five phases fix the deliverables, the evidence and who decides at each point; you pick the level of support your team needs, while the method, software and accountability stay fixed.
- 01Design™Guided implementation: Sterling supplies the structure, templates, workshops and coaching, and your relationship managers do the building.
- 02Drive™Fully managed consulting: the agreed work is done by Sterling consultants alongside your SER, relationship owners and, where needed, partners.
- 03Sustain™After certification: joint reviews, internal audits, surveillance preparation and training for people joining a relationship, every year.
- 04Automate™The system running in Effivity: policy, governance, the relationship register, RMPs, risks, issues, audits, actions and management review, all in the same workspace.
- 05Revise™The second edition of ISO 44001 once published, new relationships or countries in scope, and changing client requirements.
The first meeting settles the Sterling lead, the slot for the weekly working session, what will be delivered and who decides. Progress is measured against them each week, so a stalled partner negotiation or an unsigned joint RMP surfaces early rather than on the eve of Stage 1.

Effivity · ISO 44001 relationship management software, included in every engagement
How Effivity helps you fulfil, automate and simplify the requirements of ISO 44001:2017.
Every Sterling ISO 44001 engagement comes with Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform developed within the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. The management system clauses run on its standard modules for documents, risks, competence, audits, corrective actions, objectives and management review; the relationship register, RMPs, partner evaluations, joint issue logs and exit strategies are configured registers that follow your life cycle. Configured by your consultant for the agreed scope, it builds evidence while relationships are managed. Sterling consulting clients receive the subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

Issues, stakeholders, scope and value
Issues, including whether climate change is relevant, stakeholders and their requirements, the scope and the value collaboration should create, in one register with review dates.
Policy, governance and the SER
The policy with approval and communication records, the governance structure, and the SER's appointment and duties, visible to everyone on a relationship.
Risks, objectives and the relationship register
Risks with treatment owners, collaborative objectives with targets and deadlines, and every relationship ranked by value and risk, so priority is a recorded decision.
Competence, behaviour and the corporate RMP
Competence and behaviour records for relationship roles, linked to Sterling Academy, and the corporate RMP as a controlled document with versions and approvals.
From operational awareness to partner selection
A configured workflow per relationship records objectives and value, the initial risk assessment, the business case, the internal assessment, selection criteria and partner evaluations.
Joint RMP, joint governance and issue resolution
The joint RMP, governance meetings, shared risk register, issue log and joint exit strategy held together per relationship; value targets and trust indicators follow as it matures.
Indicators, exit evaluation, audit and review
Relationship indicators on dashboards, exit evaluations, audit programmes sampling relationships at different stages, and a management review with its decisions and actions.
Nonconformity, corrective action and lessons learned
Nonconformities closed with root cause and proof the fix worked; lessons from each relationship and exit logged and carried into the next.
What this means at the audit
At certification, the auditor will want the policy and the SER's appointment, the relationship register, a sample of RMPs and joint RMPs, partner evaluations, issue logs, the audit programme and the latest management review. In Effivity each opens as a record with its date, owner and evidence. Nobody spends the week before Stage 1 searching e-mail, and after certification the same workspace carries Sustain™ forward.

How collaborative working fits an integrated QHSE system.
- 01How an integrated programme runs
Collaborative working inside QHSE: ISO 44001 with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
Because ISO 44001 shares the others' management system clause structure, such a programme runs one context analysis, one document control, one competence record, one internal audit programme and one management review. ISO 44001 adds what the other three leave open: governance and an SER for collaboration, a register that prioritises relationships, partner selection criteria, and for each partnership a joint RMP that references the quality, environmental and safety arrangements applied to joint work.
Sterling Academy · ISO 44001 e-learning

Why Sterling
Want successful ISO 44001 certification? Come to Sterling.
Partnerships rarely stop at a border. With offices in 21 countries, one Sterling team can support a two-party joint venture or an international supply network, with one partnering approach that respects local contracting practice and culture.
One lead, wherever your partners are
Management systems implemented in 60+ countries since 2003, and one engagement team answerable for every relationship in scope.
An all-inclusive proposal, with every item on the page
Consulting, Effivity, training and Academy access are priced together, with the certification body's charges on their own line for fair comparison. No surprises, ever.
A system relationship managers will use
Less documentation and maximum effectiveness: registers, plans, training and software built around how your people already manage partners, so the system supports relationships instead of adding paperwork.
Expert and experienced consultants
Consultants with management system experience across sectors and countries since 2003, who set your collaborative system up properly at the outset, so the auditor finds partnerships already governed, measured and reviewed.
The Sterling Promise
What our ISO 44001 certification success guarantee means
Sterling stays engaged until the ISO 44001 certification outcome written into your engagement is reached, with implementation, audit preparation and the closure of findings included. What remains is a capability to choose, run and leave partnerships well, backed by the software and training included in the engagement.
Your engagement letter records the standard, scope, outcome and each party's responsibilities. You provide accurate information and operate the system as agreed, with your partners taking part in the joint arrangements; the independent certification body decides on conformity and certification. The commitment covers the agreed certification support, not a partner's conduct, a contract award or the commercial result of any relationship.
After certification
What happens after ISO 44001 certification?
Certification is where the system starts proving itself. Relationships move through value creation and staying together, trust is monitored, joint RMPs are maintained, and some relationships reach exit and are evaluated. Your certification body will be back at least once every calendar year for surveillance, and again for recertification before the three-year cycle ends.
Under Sterling OS™ Sustain™ we support joint reviews, internal audits, management review and surveillance preparation, and bring new relationships into scope as partnering grows.
FAQs
Frequently asked questions about ISO 44001
Is ISO 44001 certification mandatory?
No. ISO 44001 is voluntary and becomes a condition only where a client, framework or partner makes it one. Interest is strongest among organisations that commission or deliver major projects, but it is just as useful without external demand wherever results depend on partners.
Can we certify one partnership or programme rather than the whole organisation?
Yes. ISO 44001 can be applied to a single project, programme or acquisition, to one relationship, to several identified relationships such as a consortium, or organisation-wide. The certificate reflects the scope of your system, so define it precisely and check it matches what the client needs.
Do our partners also have to be certified?
Your certificate covers your own system. The standard recognises that collaboration needs two or more organisations and that management systems must accommodate their joint activities, so from partner selection onward your partners take part in the joint RMP, governance, issue resolution and exit strategy. Whether a partner seeks its own certificate is its decision.
What is a relationship management plan, and why are there several?
An RMP sets out the governance processes, or references to them, that define how a relationship is managed and controlled. ISO 44001 calls for a corporate RMP held as documented information, an RMP established during operational awareness and developed through the next stages, and a joint RMP started with the selected partner and maintained together until exit.
Is accredited ISO 44001 certification available?
Yes, in some countries. In the United Kingdom, UKAS accredits certification bodies for ISO 44001 under ISO/IEC 17021-1, and ISO/IEC TS 17021-12 sets the competence requirements for auditing these systems. Accreditation is granted standard by standard: as of September 2026, the national accreditation bodies of the UAE and the Philippines did not list ISO 44001 among their management system schemes. Check that the certification body's accredited scope names ISO 44001, and ask whoever wants the certificate what they will accept.
Does Sterling issue the ISO 44001 certificate?
No. We build the system with you and prepare your people; the certificate comes from an independent certification body after its own audit. A provider offering both the system and the certificate removes the independence a client relies on.
A revised ISO 44001 is on its way. Should we wait for it?
No. The draft second edition completed its ballot in January 2026 but has no publication date, and a working system is the best base for whatever the revision changes. Build to ISO 44001:2017 with Amendment 1:2024; when the new edition appears, Revise™ maps the changes and agrees timing with your certification body.
Can ISO 44001 be integrated with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001?
Yes. With the same management system clause structure, it can share context analysis, document control, internal audit and management review with your other systems, and one certification body can audit them together if it offers each standard. The relationship register, RMPs and life-cycle records still need their own evidence.
What do you need to prepare an ISO 44001 proposal?
The level at which you want to apply the standard, the relationships and partners involved, the sites and approximate headcount, any certificates you already hold, and who is asking for ISO 44001 and by when. From that we can define the scope and quote an all-inclusive proposal.
Before the first call
Prepare a useful ISO 44001 readiness brief
A partnering manual is not needed to begin. Tell us briefly which relationships matter most and why a certificate would help; these seven questions are enough:
- Which client, framework or partner wants ISO 44001, and at what level: the whole organisation, a programme or one relationship? If nobody has asked, which relationships should perform better?
- Which relationships would you put in scope, and who are the partners in each?
- How are partners chosen today, and what happens when a relationship runs into difficulty?
- Who at senior level owns collaboration, and how are joint decisions governed now?
- Which of your agreements already include governance, risk-sharing or exit provisions?
- Who can give time to implementation, internal review, training and the joint work with partners?
- Which dates matter: a tender, a client review, or the renewal of a certificate you already hold?
Those answers are enough to size the work and write a proposal you can rely on. Nothing is scored, and nothing here decides certification.
Don’t be fooled by certification scams
If it takes ten days, it is not ISO 44001 certification.
An ISO 44001 certificate depends on two things: a scope and accreditation that match what your client asked for, and partnerships that are really run the way it claims. Collaborative working attracts its own shortcuts: a partnering charter signed at a workshop and called a system, certificates from bodies not accredited for ISO 44001, and certification promised without a single partner being consulted. They are cheaper right up to the moment a client checks.

- Find out which certification body will sign the certificate and check with that body, not the consultant, that the certificate and its scope are genuine.
- Check that the accreditation names ISO 44001. Accreditation for ISO 9001 says nothing about ISO 44001; look the body up on its accreditation body's register, as UKAS schedules list ISO 44001 where it is covered. ISO 44001 does not appear by name in the scope of the Global ACI arrangement, which replaced the IAF MLA and ILAC MRA, so a client abroad should confirm it accepts the accreditation behind your certificate.
- Ask how the programme will use your real relationships. Selection criteria, RMPs and exit strategies should come from your partners and contracts, not a template naming another organisation's alliance.
- Get the division of work in writing: your tasks, the consultant's, the certification body's fees and the help on offer if the audit raises a nonconformity.
- Ask how relationship managers will be trained and where the records will live. If nobody is trained and the records sit in personal inboxes, the system leaves with the consultant.
- Walk away from "certified in ten days", "no need to involve your partners" and one invoice for consulting and certificate. A collaborative system must run on real relationships, with partners taking part, for months before an auditor sees it.
