Sterling OS™ Revise™: manage the transition: video

A one-minute film on transitions: what to do when a standard is revised and your certificate has a deadline.

  • Sterling OS™
  • 1 min

Key takeaways

  • A revised edition sets a deadline for certificates to the old edition.
  • A gap analysis lists only what the new edition changes.
  • The transition can be carried by a surveillance audit, recertification or a separate audit.
  • People are trained on what is new, with records the auditor can check.
  • Plan early to avoid the audit queue near the deadline.

When a standard is revised, the certificate has a deadline

When a standard is revised, certificates to the old edition have a deadline. Revise™ is the part of Sterling OS™ that measures a system against the new edition, changes only what the changes require, trains people on what is new and prepares the organisation for the transition audit, which is carried out by its independent, accredited certification body. It covers ISO 9001:2026, ISO 14001:2026, ISO 37001:2025, ISO/IEC 27701:2025, ISO/IEC 17024:2026 and other revised editions, alone or across an integrated system.

This one-minute film introduces the approach. The dedicated transition pages for ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 cover those two revisions in detail.

Existing certificates stay valid during the transition period, so the changes can be closed at the organisation's own pace within the timetable the certification body confirms.

Changes, not a rebuild

Revise™ works in five stages, each ending in a named deliverable agreed with a decision owner. The opening stage pins down three things: the edition currently certified and its end date, the point the certificate has reached in its three-year cycle, and the audit best placed to absorb the transition. Any planned change in sites, scope or additional standards is folded into the same timetable.

A gap analysis against the new edition then lists every changed requirement, what the organisation already does that meets it and what has to change, each with an owner and a date. The work goes where the revised requirements are, so the system people know stays recognisable. Managers, process owners and internal auditors are trained on the new edition, records are prepared for the certification auditor, and the transition audit is planned early enough to avoid the queue near the deadline, so customers, tenders and registers see no gap in the certificate.

Revise™ also covers the other kinds of change a system meets: new sites, new standards added to an integrated system and changes in regulation. The certification decision on the transitioned certificate remains with the certification body.
