ISO 20000-1 certification in Tanzania at a glance
In Tanzania, ISO/IEC 20000-1 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Banks and payment providers are tightening oversight of their technology suppliers, and that pressure reaches Tanzanian IT firms. The Bank of Tanzania's March 2026 draft Cybersecurity Guidelines for Financial Service Providers ask for third-party and outsourcing risk management, incident reporting and testing, which turns into due diligence questions for managed service, data centre and cloud providers. ISO/IEC 20000-1 answers many of them by showing that services are defined, measured and improved, with controlled incidents and changes. SADCAS's recognition does not list the standard, so certificates usually carry accreditation from another economy. Certification is by an accredited certification body, while Sterling prepares the service management system. Sterling's Nairobi office works on-site and remotely, drawing on 20+ years of practice, and can integrate the system with ISO/IEC 27001 in Effivity, with Sterling Academy included.
Who needs ISO 20000-1 in Tanzania, and what happens without it
In Tanzania the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- IT service providers to banks and payment providersThe Bank of Tanzania's draft guidelines ask financial service providers to manage third-party and outsourcing risk, which flows to their IT suppliers.
- Managed service, data centre and cloud providersCustomers ask for evidence of controlled service delivery, incident and change management.
- Internal IT departments of large organisationsShared service centres use the standard to formalise service levels with business units.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 20000-1 requires a company to prove six things about how it plans and delivers IT services.
In Tanzania these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 20000-1 explained →

How long does ISO 20000-1 certification take in Tanzania?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Tanzania these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of services and locations in scope
- Maturity of incident, change and service level management
- Dependence on third-party suppliers
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 20000-1 certification cost in Tanzania?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Tanzania these factors move both.
- Number of services and supporting teams
- Tooling for service management
- Supplier contract changes
- Certification body fees quoted separately
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 20000-1 consultants and certification bodies in Tanzania
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 20000-1 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Tanzania are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Tanzania
Choose a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 20000-1 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 does not show ISO/IEC 20000-1 among SADCAS's management system scopes, so a certificate used in Tanzania may carry accreditation from another economy; check the accreditation body, the scope and your customer's acceptance before you sign. Audit language
Acts are published with a Kiswahili text and an English version, and bodies such as TBS and the PDPC publish in both languages. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Service desks, operations centres and records are sampled; much of the audit can be remote where the certification body allows.
ISO 20000-1 in Tanzania: questions clients ask
Why do Tanzanian IT providers pursue ISO/IEC 20000-1?
Mostly because their clients are scrutinised. The Bank of Tanzania's March 2026 draft cybersecurity guidelines ask financial service providers to manage third-party and outsourcing risk, so banks look harder at IT suppliers. A certified service management system answers many of those due diligence questions. The draft may change, so follow the final text.
Is ISO/IEC 20000-1 accredited through SADCAS?
Not within the scopes shown for SADCAS on the recognition list dated 31 December 2025. Certificates used in Tanzania therefore usually come from bodies accredited elsewhere within the international arrangements. Ask the certification body which accreditation body covers ISO/IEC 20000-1 for it, and check the scope.
How does ISO/IEC 20000-1 fit with ISO/IEC 27001?
They complement each other. ISO/IEC 20000-1 manages how services are planned, delivered and improved, while ISO/IEC 27001 manages information security risk. Shared processes such as change, incident and supplier management can serve both, so many providers run an integrated system and certify both with one audit plan.
What slows an ISO/IEC 20000-1 project?
Usually service definition. Providers need a clear catalogue of services, agreed service levels and working incident, change and problem processes before audit. Heavy reliance on third-party suppliers adds contract and monitoring work, and the number of services in scope sets the overall effort.
