ISO 13485 certification in Tanzania at a glance
TMDA Guidelines on Submission of Documentation for Quality Audit of Medical Devices and Diagnostics Manufacturing Sites (June 2023) refers to ISO 13485, yet none of the Tanzanian instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in Tanzania ask for it anyway.
Medical device makers face a regulator that names the standard: the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority's June 2023 guidelines for quality audit of manufacturing sites expect compliance with the current ISO 13485 standard and TMDA's device regulations, and list a certified ISO 13485 certificate among the supporting documents. Foreign manufacturers registering devices meet the same expectation, and pharmaceutical investors in TISEZA's zones adding device lines inherit it. SADCAS's international recognition does not list ISO 13485, so certificates for Tanzanian sites usually carry accreditation from another economy, and the certificate must also be one TMDA accepts. An accredited certification body audits and certifies, never Sterling. Sterling's Nairobi office prepares the quality system, process validation and risk files with your team, bringing 20+ years of practice, Effivity for document control and Sterling Academy for training.
Who needs ISO 13485 in Tanzania, and what happens without it
In Tanzania the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Medical device and diagnostics manufacturers in TanzaniaTMDA's quality audit guidelines expect manufacturing sites to meet the current ISO 13485 standard.
- Foreign manufacturers registering devices with TMDATMDA lists a certified copy of an ISO 13485 certificate of compliance among the documents for a site quality audit.
- Pharmaceutical investors in special economic zonesTISEZA lists pharmaceuticals among its investment sectors, and device lines bring ISO 13485 expectations.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 13485 requires a company to prove six things about making medical devices that are safe and work as intended.
In Tanzania these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 13485 explained →

How long does ISO 13485 certification take in Tanzania?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Tanzania these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Device classes and whether design is in scope
- Sterilisation, cleanroom and other special processes
- TMDA quality audit or registration timetable
- Certification body availability
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 13485 certification cost in Tanzania?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Tanzania these factors move both.
- Number of sites and device families
- Validation of processes and software
- Technical documentation and risk management files
- Certification body fees quoted separately
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 13485 consultants and certification bodies in Tanzania
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 13485 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Tanzania are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Tanzania
Choose a certification body accredited for ISO 13485 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 does not show ISO 13485 among SADCAS's management system scopes, so a certificate used in Tanzania may carry accreditation from another economy; check the accreditation body, the scope and your customer's acceptance before you sign. Audit language
Acts are published with a Kiswahili text and an English version, and bodies such as TBS and the PDPC publish in both languages. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Manufacturing, cleanroom, sterilisation and warehouse areas are audited on-site; design files and records can be reviewed remotely.
ISO 13485 in Tanzania: questions clients ask
Does TMDA require ISO 13485 from device manufacturers?
TMDA's quality audit guidelines expect it. The June 2023 guidelines say manufacturing sites of medical devices and diagnostics are to meet the quality management system requirements of the current ISO 13485 standard and TMDA's device regulations. Read the current guideline and confirm with TMDA how it applies to your device class.
What ISO 13485 evidence does TMDA ask for?
TMDA lists a certified copy of an appropriate certificate of compliance to ISO 13485, together with a certified translation where it is not in English, among the documents for a site quality audit. The guideline names the issuing authorities it accepts, so check that list before relying on a particular certificate.
Can SADCAS accredit ISO 13485 certification?
Medical device quality systems do not appear among SADCAS's recognised scopes, so a Tanzanian manufacturer normally uses a certification body accredited in another economy. Two checks matter before you commit: that the accreditation scope names ISO 13485 for your device technology, and that TMDA's guideline accepts the issuer for its quality audit.
What drives the effort of an ISO 13485 project?
Device class and scope come first, especially whether design and development are included. Special processes such as sterilisation and cleanrooms need validation, and technical documentation and risk management files take time. The TMDA quality audit timetable often sets the deadline, so plan backwards from it.
