In short

AS9100 certification in Tanzania at a glance

In Tanzania, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Aviation in Tanzania is regulated by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, which approves maintenance organisations and certifies airworthiness under the Civil Aviation Act, Cap. 80. That approval is a licence to operate, not a quality certificate, and aerospace customers often add their own demand for AS9100 or, for maintenance, AS9110. The standard builds on ISO 9001 with configuration management, product safety, counterfeit parts prevention and first article inspection. SADCAS's international recognition does not list the aerospace scheme, so a certificate for a Tanzanian site is issued by a certification body accredited and authorised elsewhere. Manufacturers in TISEZA's zones exploring aerospace supply chains face the same route. Sterling prepares the system and evidence while an accredited certification body audits; the work runs from Sterling's Nairobi office, which brings 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries and includes Effivity and Sterling Academy with the engagement.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in Tanzania, and what happens without it

In Tanzania the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Aircraft maintenance organisationsTCAA approves maintenance organisations under the Civil Aviation Act, Cap. 80, and some customers also ask for aerospace quality management certification.
  • Parts, component and service suppliers to aerospace customersAerospace primes and airlines commonly require AS9100-family certification from suppliers.
  • Manufacturers in special economic zones seeking aerospace workEntering aerospace supply chains usually starts with a supplier quality requirement.

Requirements

AS9100 requirements in Tanzania

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In Tanzania these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How Sterling gets a Tanzanian company certified

How to get AS9100 certified in Tanzania

One team from the Nairobi office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Tanzania are served from Sterling's Nairobi office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against AS9100 and the Tanzanian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.
    Included in every engagement
    • End to end, from one team
    • Effivity ISO & GRC software
    • Preferential Sterling Academy access, with complimentary awareness training for your people
    • Internal auditor training for your audit team, as applicable to your standard
    • Vulnerability assessment on ISMS engagements

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in Tanzania?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Tanzania these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Scope of design, production or maintenance activities
      • Configuration management, first article inspection and special processes
      • Customer-specific requirements
      • Availability of aerospace-qualified auditors

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in Tanzania?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Tanzania these factors move both.

      • Size of the site and product complexity
      • Special process controls and calibration
      • Auditor travel for aerospace-qualified teams
      • Certification body fees quoted separately

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Tanzania

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Tanzania are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Tanzania (3)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Civil Aviation Act, Cap. 80 and TCAA approvalsContext
TCAA lists Approved Maintenance Organisation approval and airworthiness certification among its functions; regulatory approval is separate from AS9100 or AS9110 certification.
SADCAS recognition scopes (list dated 31 December 2025)Context
The scopes listed for SADCAS cover ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22000 and product certification; other management system standards are accredited elsewhere.
Investment and Special Economic Zones Act, 2025 (Act No. 6 of 2025) and TISEZAContext
The Act repealed the Export Processing Zones Act, 2002 and the Special Economic Zones Act, 2006 and set up TISEZA to facilitate investment and manage special economic zones; it does not cite ISO standards.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Tanzania

Choose a certification body accredited for AS9100 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 does not show AS9100 among SADCAS's management system scopes, so a certificate used in Tanzania may carry accreditation from another economy; check the accreditation body, the scope and your customer's acceptance before you sign. Edition and transition details: AS9100 hub →

          Audit language

Acts are published with a Kiswahili text and an English version, and bodies such as TBS and the PDPC publish in both languages. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Production and maintenance areas, special processes and records are audited on-site; some document review can be remote.

AS9100 in Tanzania: questions clients ask

Does TCAA approval replace AS9100 certification?

No, they answer different questions. TCAA approves maintenance organisations and certifies airworthiness under the Civil Aviation Act, Cap. 80, which is a regulatory licence to operate. AS9100, or AS9110 for maintenance, is a voluntary quality management certification that aerospace customers ask for. Many maintenance organisations need the approval and choose the certificate too.

Who accredits AS9100 certification bodies for Tanzanian sites?

An accreditation body within the international arrangements that covers the aerospace scheme. The scopes listed for SADCAS on the recognition list dated 31 December 2025 do not include AS9100, so certificates for Tanzanian sites come from bodies accredited elsewhere. Ask the certification body for its accreditation and aerospace authorisation before you engage.

Should a maintenance organisation choose AS9100 or AS9110?

Choose by activity. AS9110 is written for maintenance, repair and overhaul organisations, while AS9100 suits design and production of aerospace parts. A business doing both may need a combined scope. Ask your aerospace customers which certificate they recognise, and keep TCAA's approval requirements running alongside.

What makes AS9100 harder than ISO 9001?

The aerospace additions. AS9100 adds configuration management, product safety, counterfeit parts prevention, first article inspection and tight control of special processes, and customers layer their own requirements on top. Finding aerospace-qualified auditors also affects the timing for a site in Tanzania, so plan the certification body early.
