In short

AS9100 certification in Switzerland at a glance

Two Swiss instruments bear on AS9100. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Switzerland keep asking for the certificate?

Aerospace quality requirements reach Swiss suppliers through purchase terms rather than through statute, since Swiss law does not name them. Precision machining, metal processing and electrical engineering firms, grouped as the MEM industries by Switzerland Global Enterprise, are the businesses most likely to be handed AS9100 in a customer's supplier manual. A public buyer can also ask for evidence of technical and organisational capacity under the Public Procurement Act, but only as a particular tender defines it. AS9100 layers aerospace requirements on a quality management system such as ISO 9001, covering configuration management, product safety, risk and the control of special processes. The certificate comes from a certification body, and your customer may accept only certain bodies, so check accreditation held with the Swiss Accreditation Service or an equivalent body before applying. Sterling's Frankfurt office supports Swiss suppliers with gap assessment, records design and audit preparation, drawing on 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in Switzerland, and what happens without it

In Switzerland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Precision machining and MEM suppliers to aerospace programmesSwitzerland Global Enterprise names the mechanical, electrical and metal industries as a focus industry; aerospace customers write AS9100 into purchase terms, and those terms decide.
  • Electronics and sensor makers supplying aviation and spaceElectrical engineering sits within the same focus industry, and supplier quality requirements come from the customer's contract.
  • Contractors bidding for public work that includes aerospace-related supplyThe Public Procurement Act lets an authority set eligibility criteria on technical and organisational capacity and name the evidence it wants.

AS9100 requirements in Switzerland

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In Switzerland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How Sterling gets a Swiss company certified

How to get AS9100 certified in Switzerland

One team from the Frankfurt office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Switzerland are served from Sterling's Frankfurt office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against AS9100 and the Swiss requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in Switzerland?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Switzerland these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Number of product lines, sites and special processes
      • Status of configuration management and first article inspection
      • Customer-specific flow-down requirements
      • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in Switzerland?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Switzerland these factors move both.

      • Number of sites and employees
      • Special processes and outsourced operations
      • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
      • Integration with an existing ISO 9001 system

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Switzerland

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Switzerland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Switzerland (2)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Federal Act on Public Procurement (PPA)Does not name the standard
Eligibility criteria are set per tender and may relate to technical and organisational capacity.
Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS)Does not name the standard
National accreditation body that accredits certification bodies against international standards.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Switzerland

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. AS9100 is a sector scheme, so confirm with your customer and the scheme's own rules which certification bodies are acceptable. Audit language

German, French, Italian and English are all used in Swiss business; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender, a regulator's correspondence or a customer contract.

          Remote and on-site

Remote elements are at the certification body's discretion; production and inspection areas are normally visited on-site.

AS9100 in Switzerland: questions clients ask

Is AS9100 required by Swiss law?

Swiss law does not name AS9100. Aerospace buyers usually write it into their supplier terms, and the Public Procurement Act leaves eligibility criteria to each tender. So the requirement comes from your customer or the tender, and the right first step is to read that contract wording closely.

Who certifies a Swiss company to AS9100?

Aerospace customers often have a say. The certificate comes from a certification body, never from Sterling, and your customer may accept only certain bodies. Ask for the body's accreditation scope from SAS or an equivalent body, then confirm with the customer before applying.

Does AS9100 build on ISO 9001 for a Swiss manufacturer?

In practice, yes: it adds aerospace-specific requirements to the quality management system, so firms often hold or add ISO 9001 first. That makes the path shorter for Swiss manufacturers already certified. How much extra work remains depends on your processes, your customers' flow-down and your special processes.

Which Swiss industries typically need AS9100?

Those supplying aerospace customers, most often within precision machining, metal processing and electrical engineering, which Switzerland Global Enterprise groups as a focus industry. There is no register of obligated firms; the need arises from the buyer. Check the purchase terms of each programme you want to supply.
