ISO 42001 certification in Sri Lanka at a glance
In Sri Lanka, ISO/IEC 42001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Sri Lankan software exporters and banks adopting AI soon face the same vendor question: how are your AI systems governed? ISO/IEC 42001 answers it with a management system. None of the laws cited here requires the standard, but the Data Protection Authority's circular says the 2025 amendment to the Personal Data Protection Act extends review of automated decisions to cases affecting rights protected by the Constitution, and the Act's Part I and Part III duties take effect on 1 January 2027. The Central Bank's technology risk Directions cover new technology initiatives without naming AI. Certification is by an accredited certification body, never by Sterling, and SLAB's recognition page does not name AI management systems among its scopes. Sterling's Mumbai office helps organisations inventory AI systems, assess risk and prepare for audit, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Sri Lanka, and what happens without it
In Sri Lanka the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- ICT and business process management firms building or deploying AI for clientsCustomers abroad ask providers how AI systems are governed, and Sri Lankan data law applies to the personal data they use.
- Banks and finance companies adopting AI-based servicesTechnology risk governance under Central Bank directions covers new technology initiatives under Board oversight.
- Controllers using automated decisions about individualsThe 2025 amendment extends review of automated decisions to cases affecting rights protected by the Constitution.
- Start-ups and software exportersEnterprise customers increasingly include AI governance questions in vendor reviews.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Sri Lanka these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Sri Lanka?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Sri Lanka these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of AI systems and use cases in scope
- Maturity of risk, impact and data governance processes
- Third-party models and data suppliers
- Certification body scheduling and sector-qualified auditor availability
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Sri Lanka?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Sri Lanka these factors move both.
- Headcount and number of teams in scope
- Number of AI systems, models and data sources
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Testing, monitoring and documentation tooling
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Sri Lanka
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Sri Lanka are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Sri Lanka
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. SLAB's recognition page does not name AI management systems among its management systems scopes, so ask the certification body which accreditation covers ISO/IEC 42001 and confirm that your customer accepts it. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →
Audit language
Business records, standards and tenders are mostly in English, and the Constitution names English as the link language alongside Sinhala and Tamil; interviews with operators and workers may run in Sinhala or Tamil. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Audits combine on-site interviews and records review; some document review can be remote at the certification body's discretion.
ISO 42001 in Sri Lanka: questions clients ask
Is ISO 42001 required by Sri Lankan law?
None of the laws cited here requires or names it. The Personal Data Protection Act extends review of automated decisions to cases affecting constitutional rights through its 2025 amendment, and its Part I and Part III duties take effect on 1 January 2027. ISO 42001 can organise AI governance but does not replace legal compliance, so check obligations with counsel.
How does the data protection law touch AI systems?
Where an AI system processes personal data, the Act's processing and controller obligations apply from 1 January 2027, and the Authority's circular says automated decision review now extends to cases affecting rights protected by the Constitution. Confirm how these duties apply to your use case with the Data Protection Authority.
Do banks have specific AI rules from the Central Bank?
Not in the instruments cited here. Banking Act Directions No. 16 of 2021 set technology risk governance, and new technology initiatives must meet its requirements, but they do not name artificial intelligence or ISO/IEC 42001. A bank adopting AI should apply its governance framework and ask its supervisors if it has doubts.
Which accreditation backs an ISO 42001 certificate?
AI management systems are not in the scope list on SLAB's recognition page. Anyone offering ISO/IEC 42001 certification should explain what accreditation applies. Collect the accreditation certificate and scope at the start, and ask your customer whether it will accept them before audit work begins.
