In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Sri Lanka at a glance

In Sri Lanka, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Exporters of food, apparel and rubber goods increasingly ask where a test report came from, and an accredited laboratory is the answer. The Sri Lanka Accreditation Board, established by Act No. 32 of 2005, accredits testing and calibration laboratories against ISO/IEC 17025, and its recognition page states that it is an ILAC signatory for testing including calibration, medical testing and proficiency testing providers. A laboratory is accredited for defined methods, not certified, and the scope listed on the accreditation certificate shows exactly which tests customers can rely on. Accreditation is granted by SLAB, never by Sterling. Sterling's Mumbai office helps laboratories document methods, validate them, estimate measurement uncertainty and prepare for assessment, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Sri Lanka, and what happens without it

In Sri Lanka the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Testing laboratories serving exporters, manufacturers and regulatorsSLAB accredits testing and calibration laboratories against ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Calibration laboratories serving factories and hospitalsSLAB's ILAC arrangement scope covers testing including calibration.
  • Laboratories supporting food, apparel and rubber exportersExport buyers ask for test reports from accredited laboratories, and SLAB's ILAC signatory status supports acceptance abroad.
  • In-house factory laboratoriesQuality laboratories inside plants use accreditation to make test results credible to customers.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in Sri Lanka

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Sri Lanka these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Sri Lanka?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Sri Lanka these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of test methods and calibration parameters in scope
  • Maturity of method validation and measurement uncertainty work
  • Availability of reference standards and proficiency testing
  • SLAB assessor scheduling and corrective action response

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Sri Lanka?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Sri Lanka these factors move both.

  • Number of methods, disciplines and sites in scope
  • Reference standards, calibration and proficiency testing
  • SLAB assessment and annual fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Facility, environment and equipment upgrades

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Sri Lanka

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Sri Lanka are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Sri Lanka

A laboratory is accredited, not certified. SLAB, the national accreditation authority, assesses laboratories against ISO/IEC 17025 and states that it is an ILAC signatory for testing including calibration, medical testing and proficiency testing providers. Medical laboratories are accredited against ISO 15189 under a separate scheme. Apply to SLAB and ask its published scope policy before choosing which tests to include. Audit language

Business records, standards and tenders are mostly in English, and the Constitution names English as the link language alongside Sinhala and Tamil; interviews with operators and workers may run in Sinhala or Tamil. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the SLAB at application.

    Remote and on-site

Assessment is on-site at the laboratory, covering equipment, procedures and witnessed tests; document review can be remote at SLAB's discretion.

ISO 17025 in Sri Lanka: questions clients ask

Who accredits laboratories in Sri Lanka?

The Sri Lanka Accreditation Board, the national accreditation authority established by Act No. 32 of 2005. It accredits testing and calibration laboratories against ISO/IEC 17025 and medical laboratories against ISO 15189. A laboratory is accredited, not certified, and Sterling does not accredit laboratories. Apply to SLAB for the current scheme documents.

Is SLAB recognised internationally for laboratory accreditation?

SLAB's own recognition page states that it is a full member of ILAC and a signatory to the arrangement for testing including calibration, medical testing and proficiency testing providers. That supports acceptance of reports from accredited laboratories abroad. Check ILAC's signatory listing for the current position before relying on it in a contract.

What standard does an accredited testing laboratory work to?

ISO/IEC 17025, which SLAB's scheme page names as the basis for testing and calibration laboratory accreditation. It covers management and technical competence, including method validation, measurement uncertainty and traceability. Accreditation applies to defined tests, not to the whole laboratory, so scope the methods your customers actually need.

Does accreditation make every result accepted by every customer?

No. Accreditation shows competence for the methods in the scope, and ILAC signatory status supports recognition abroad, but a customer or regulator may still name its own approved laboratories or methods. Ask the buyer or authority whether SLAB-accredited reports are accepted for the specific test before investing in accreditation.
