In short

ISO 42001 certification in South Africa at a glance

One South African instrument bears on ISO/IEC 42001. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in South Africa keep asking for the certificate?

Policy on artificial intelligence is still unsettled here: the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies published a draft national AI policy in April 2026 and withdrew it in its entirety by notice in June 2026. The law that does apply is POPIA, which restricts decisions with legal or substantial effects based solely on automated processing intended to profile a person, and financial institutions add the FSCA and Prudential Authority Joint Standards on IT governance and cyber resilience for the systems that host their models. In that gap, enterprise and export customers ask AI developers and users for evidence of governance, and ISO/IEC 42001 provides it: an AI management system covering policy, roles, impact assessment, data and model lifecycle controls and supplier oversight. Certification is issued by an accredited certification body; ISO/IEC 42001 is not among SANAS's sub-scopes on the IAF legacy listing, so confirm the body's accreditation. Sterling's Johannesburg office builds the system alongside existing ISO/IEC 27001 and privacy controls. The route and local questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 42001 in South Africa, and what happens without it

In South Africa the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Organisations using AI in decisions about people (credit, insurance, recruitment)POPIA restricts decisions based solely on automated profiling.
  • Financial institutions deploying AI modelsIT and cyber risk Joint Standards apply to the systems that host them.
  • AI product developers selling to enterprise and export customersCustomers ask for evidence of AI governance in the absence of a national AI law.

ISO 42001 requirements in South Africa

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.

You know where AI is usedThe AI systems you develop, provide or use are identified, together with the role your organisation plays for each.
Leadership sets the rules for AITop management sets an AI policy and objectives, assigns accountability and provides resources for responsible use.
You assessed AI risks and impactsRisks from AI systems, and their impacts on individuals, groups and society, are assessed before and during use and then treated.
Each AI system is managed through its lifeDesign, data, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement follow defined processes with records you can show.
Data and third parties are under controlThe quality and origin of data, and suppliers of models or components, are managed against your own requirements.
You monitor, audit and improveAI systems and the management system are monitored, audited internally and reviewed by management, with problems corrected.

In South Africa these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How Sterling gets a South African company certified

How to get ISO 42001 certified in South Africa

One team from the Johannesburg office carries the work from scoping to certificate. On-site from the Johannesburg (Sandown) office across Gauteng and, by arrangement, other provinces; remote delivery for distributed teams.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 42001 and the South African requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in South Africa?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In South Africa these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of AI systems and their risk level
  • Data governance and model documentation maturity
  • AI impact assessments completed before stage 2

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in South Africa?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In South Africa these factors move both.

  • Number of AI systems and business units in scope
  • Integration with ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Third-party model and data supplier reviews

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in South Africa

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in South Africa are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in South Africa (2)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 — automated decision makingExpected in practice
Restricts decisions with legal or substantial effect based solely on automated processing intended to profile a person, with exceptions; ISO/IEC 42001 not cited.
Withdrawal of the Draft South Africa National AI Policy (Notice 3978 of 2026)Context
The draft policy published on 10 April 2026 was withdrawn in its entirety; no national AI policy or AI law found in force.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 42001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 42001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in South Africa

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by SANAS or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its South African accreditation scope has been verified. ISO/IEC 42001 is not among SANAS's sub-scopes on the IAF legacy listing; confirm the body's accreditation for ISO/IEC 42001 specifically. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →

Audit language

English is the usual audit language; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 42001 in South Africa: questions clients ask

Is there an AI law in South Africa?

None was found in force. A draft National Artificial Intelligence Policy was published in April 2026 and withdrawn in its entirety in June 2026. Other laws still apply to AI systems, notably POPIA. This position may change, so check the current state with the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies or your counsel.

Does POPIA apply to AI?

Yes. POPIA's processing conditions apply whenever an AI system handles personal information, and the Act restricts decisions with legal or substantial effect that rest solely on automated processing intended to profile a person, with exceptions. ISO/IEC 42001 is not cited. Take advice from your counsel or the Information Regulator on your own use.

Who certifies ISO/IEC 42001 in South Africa?

An accredited certification body, but which one is open. SANAS's sub-scopes on the IAF legacy listing leave out ISO/IEC 42001, so local accreditation for AI management cannot be presumed. Bodies accredited elsewhere within the international arrangements may be an alternative. Request evidence of ISO/IEC 42001 accreditation from any body you consider.
