In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in South Africa at a glance

In South Africa, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Laboratory accreditation has a single door in this country. The Accreditation for Conformity Assessment, Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act 19 of 2006 recognises SANAS as the only accreditation body in the Republic for the accreditation of conformity assessment and calibration, and ILAC lists SANAS as an MRA signatory for testing and calibration under ISO/IEC 17025, which is what lets results travel to export customers. Testing laboratories serving mining, food and manufacturing clients, calibration laboratories and in-house laboratories all follow the same route: a documented management system, validated methods, measurement uncertainty, metrological traceability, proficiency testing and competent staff, followed by a SANAS assessment that includes witnessing work. ISO/IEC 17025 leads to accreditation, not certification, and SANAS makes the decision. Sterling's Johannesburg office prepares the laboratory, from gap assessment and method validation files to internal audit and the response to findings, with Sterling Academy training for analysts and quality staff. The route and the questions laboratories ask are set out below.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in South Africa, and what happens without it

In South Africa the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Testing laboratories serving food, mining and manufacturing clientsCustomers and regulators rely on SANAS-accredited results.
  • Calibration laboratoriesSANAS is an ILAC MRA signatory for calibration under ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Laboratories supporting HACCP and food safety verificationFood businesses need reliable test results for verification.
  • In-house laboratories of manufacturers and minesAccreditation gives customers confidence in release testing.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in South Africa

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In South Africa these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in South Africa?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In South Africa these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of tests or calibrations in the requested scope
  • Availability of method validation and measurement uncertainty data
  • Proficiency testing results available before assessment

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in South Africa?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In South Africa these factors move both.

  • Size of the accreditation scope
  • SANAS application and assessment fees, separate from consulting
  • Equipment calibration and reference material needs

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in South Africa

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in South Africa are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

ISO 17025 in South Africa: questions clients ask

Who accredits laboratories in South Africa?

SANAS. The Accreditation for Conformity Assessment, Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act 19 of 2006 recognises it as the only accreditation body in the Republic for conformity assessment and calibration. A laboratory seeking ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation applies to SANAS, which assesses it and decides. Sterling prepares your laboratory; it does not accredit.

    Are SANAS-accredited results recognised abroad?

Often, yes. SANAS is an ILAC MRA signatory, and its scope covers calibration and testing under ISO/IEC 17025, as well as medical testing, inspection, proficiency testing providers and reference material producers. That arrangement is what gives results international standing. Check the current scope for your specific tests before you quote it to a customer.

    Is ISO 17025 a certificate?

No. ISO/IEC 17025 leads to accreditation, not certification. SANAS, South Africa's only accreditation body, grants it after assessing your laboratory's competence for a defined scope of tests or calibrations. The difference matters when you describe it to customers: say your laboratory is accredited, and name the scope.
