In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Oman at a glance

In Oman, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Laboratories in Oman have two linked structures to understand. The Directorate General for Standards and Metrology at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion reports registering testing and calibration laboratories, while the Oman Accreditation Centre, under the same ministry, describes accreditation processes aligned with ISO/IEC 17025. The GCC Accreditation Center, an ILAC MRA signatory for testing and calibration with Oman among its listed economies, opened a branch in Oman in June 2024 and provides the regional route. Accreditation is granted by an accreditation body after its own assessment, not by a consultant. Sterling's Dubai office prepares laboratories for that assessment: the management system, method validation and verification, measurement uncertainty, metrological traceability, proficiency testing plans and internal audits, with staff trained through Sterling Academy and Effivity included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Oman, and what happens without it

In Oman the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Testing laboratoriesThe ministry reports accreditation processes aligned with ISO/IEC 17025 at the Oman Accreditation Centre.
  • Calibration laboratoriesThe Directorate General for Standards and Metrology reports registering testing and calibration laboratories.
  • In-house laboratories at industrial and zone manufacturersCustomers and authorities rely on credible results for product conformity and exports.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in Oman

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Oman these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

How Sterling gets an Omani company accredited

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Oman?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Oman these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of tests and calibrations in the requested scope
  • Method validation and uncertainty data available
  • Proficiency testing results before assessment

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Oman?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Oman these factors move both.

  • Size of the accreditation scope
  • Accreditation body application and assessment fees, separate from consulting
  • Equipment calibration and reference material needs

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Oman

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Oman are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Oman

Accreditation, not certification: granted by an accreditation body after its own assessment. In Oman that is the Oman Accreditation Centre, or the GCC Accreditation Center, an ILAC MRA signatory for testing and calibration. Sterling prepares the laboratory; the accreditation body decides. Audit language

Agree the assessment language with the accreditation body; methods and records may be kept in Arabic or English.

    Remote and on-site

Assessments include on-site witnessing of tests or calibrations; some document review may be remote at the accreditation body's discretion.

ISO 17025 in Oman: questions clients ask

    Who accredits laboratories in Oman?

The Oman Accreditation Centre, operating under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, which reports accreditation processes aligned with ISO/IEC 17025. The GCC Accreditation Center, an ILAC MRA signatory for testing and calibration with Oman among its economies, is the regional option. Ask each body for its current scope and recognition status before you apply.

    Is GAC accreditation recognised internationally?

The ILAC list shows the GCC Accreditation Center as an MRA signatory for testing and calibration under ISO/IEC 17025, inspection under ISO/IEC 17020 and medical testing under ISO 15189, with Oman among its listed economies. The list does not show the Oman Accreditation Centre separately, so confirm which body's accreditation your customers accept.

    Is ISO 17025 a certification?

No, it is an accreditation. An accreditation body assesses your methods and technical competence, witnesses work being done and reviews validation, uncertainty and traceability records, then decides whether to accredit the scope you requested. A certification body plays no part, and a consultant cannot grant or promise the outcome.

Does registering a laboratory with the ministry replace accreditation?

The Directorate General for Standards and Metrology reports registering testing and calibration laboratories, a step the ministry describes separately from accreditation. Ask the Directorate what registration requires for your type of laboratory, and ask your customers whether they want accreditation as well. Accreditation itself is decided by the accreditation body.
