ISO 42001 certification in Nigeria at a glance
NDP Act-GAID 2025 refers to ISO/IEC 42001, yet none of the Nigerian instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in Nigeria ask for it anyway.
In Nigeria, the rules that bite on AI today sit in personal data law. Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, people may refuse decisions made solely by automated means where the effects are legal or similarly significant, and the Commission's 2025 directive has an article on emerging technologies requiring anyone deploying artificial intelligence, Internet of Things or blockchain tools on personal data to document technical and organisational parameters, assess impact and monitor outcomes. Neither text names ISO/IEC 42001. A certificate is therefore structured proof of AI governance that banks, fintechs, outsourcers and software vendors may be asked to show buyers. The standard is new, so look closely at the accreditation behind any certificate offered. Sterling's Lagos office helps with AI inventories, impact assessment, oversight roles and audit preparation, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Nigeria, and what happens without it
In Nigeria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Banks, fintechs and lenders using automated scoring or fraud modelsThe Act gives people a right not to be subject to decisions based solely on automated processing, with safeguards such as human intervention.
- Software, cloud and data firms building or deploying AIThe 2025 directive sets expectations for controllers and processors that deploy artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things or blockchain to process personal data.
- BPO and customer-service operators adopting AI toolsOverseas clients ask providers how AI use, data handling and human oversight are governed.
- Healthcare and education technology providersSensitive and children's data raise the stakes of automated decisions.
- Suppliers to government digital programmesPublic bidding documents decide what AI governance evidence a buyer wants.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Nigeria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Nigeria?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nigeria these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Inventory of AI systems with purposes, data sources and risk levels
- Impact assessment and human oversight arrangements
- Change, incident and supplier controls for models and data
- Availability of an accredited certification body for this newer standard
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Nigeria?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nigeria these factors move both.
- Number of AI systems and teams in scope
- Impact assessment and testing effort
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Tooling for monitoring and documentation
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Nigeria
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nigeria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nigeria
Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 42001 by the Nigeria National Accreditation System (NiNAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Global ACI's entry for NiNAS does not list ISO/IEC 42001, a newer standard, among its management-system entries, so ask the certification body which accreditation backs an AI management system certificate and whether it is yet accredited for it. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →
Audit language
English is the usual audit and document language; agree it with the certification body at application, and say early if interviews will run in another language.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; model development, data and oversight records can often be reviewed remotely, while operational sites using AI in processes are normally visited.
ISO 42001 in Nigeria: questions clients ask
Does the Nigerian data protection directive cover artificial intelligence?
Yes, in its article on emerging technologies. A controller or processor deploying artificial intelligence, Internet of Things or blockchain tools to process personal data must document technical and organisational parameters, run a data privacy impact assessment and monitor outcomes. It does not name ISO/IEC 42001. Confirm how it applies to your tools with counsel or the Commission.
Can people challenge automated decisions under Nigerian law?
The Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 gives a data subject the right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing that produces legal or similar significant effects, subject to exceptions and safeguards such as human intervention. Ask counsel whether an exception covers your model before you rely on it.
Can a Nigerian-accredited body already certify to ISO/IEC 42001?
Global ACI's entry for the Nigeria National Accreditation System lists no recognition for it, which is unsurprising for a newer standard. A body accredited by another member of the arrangements may certify you. Request its accreditation certificate, confirm the scope includes this standard, and check your customer accepts the result.
Where should an AI management system project start?
With an inventory of every AI system, its purpose, data sources and risk level. Impact assessments and human oversight follow, then change and incident handling. Without the inventory the scope cannot be fixed, so build it first. Rank systems by the harm they could cause to people, and begin the deepest work with the highest-risk ones.
